Title: RE: Compaq Evo Workstation W6000

I've got an old HP Netserver, an IBM Netfinity 3000 and a whitebox from U-tron.  They all work fine.  The whitebox was significantly cheaper (like maybe 1/2 the price at the time for a compatible Dell, HP or Compag).

He doesn't need a laptop.

Current setup. Toshiba laptop for all applications and clone box NT server
for file/print services. The NT server is useless and the laptop is falling
apart. He wants to consolidate everything onto one computer. He wants disk
mirroring capability (which I'm not even sure the Ultra160 controller can
even do - still reading). He wanted something that was dual processor
capable (even though I know he'll never use it or need it) and he wants
something that will last awhile. Something 'cheap' wasn't one of his
concerns. He runs a myriad of applications ranging from Office, Quicken,
Vendor specific software and diagnostic software for ATM's and Kiosks (sp?),
and countless others. He's an agent for NCR so he sells ATM's, Kiosk's, Cold
Imaging solutions.

I know the Evo would be more machine than he needs. I guess the better thing
to do is ask for recommendations based on his needs/wants.

Dual processor capable
Disk mirroring - hardware (obviously)

He basically wants a super computer that will fit under his desk. What would
you all recommend based on your experiences with different brands?

Hey folks,

My old man runs his own business out of his home and he's looking to get
some new hardware. He currently runs all of his applications off of a 4
year old Toshiba laptop. He wants something that'll be robust, fast,
provide some level of fault tolerance, and be reliable. Most of my
experience is with Compaq so I'm starting with them.

The machine I'm looking at is a Compaq Evo Workstation W6000. Specs:
Intel Xeon 1.7Ghz (dual proc. capable), 512mb RDRAM/800, Integrated
Ultra160 SCSI Drive - (1) 18.2gb/15k Ultra 160 SCSI drive and (1) 18.2
WideUltra3 SCSI 15k, cd, nic, blah, blah, running Win2k Pro.

First, does anyone have any experience with this particular model? Likes
- Dislikes? Second, there's no option for an internal tape drive, so
what external models would you recommend? (to be safe, I'd go with tape
storage equal to the amount of disk space)

Thanks in advance for your suggestions, insight, warnings, etc...

2001-09-07 Thread Anthony McInerney

Whatever you decide - please - hold off for near the end of september. Why??
So you can hopefully get it pre-installed with windowsXP instead of 2000. I
am using a 2000 box on this machine and work. and trialing XP on my laptop.
XP is wonderfully better *and* more stable. (i've been using windows2000
since it was in beta3).

ALSO lets not forget 2k application compatibility, is crap. :) . XP is
wholesomly better, with built in compatibility options incase the app
doesn't work.

regards anthony.

PS - to the group; this isn't a advert for XP, he asked for everyones
advise, this is mine, i've been using XP for a month or 2 now, and it's a
solid conclusion since i've been at this since the dos days :). NO FLAMES
PLEASE :P

Well obviously he isn't going to find fault tolerance in a laptop, so
that is out of the question. What is he doing on this box?
I'm not familiar with the Compaq desktop series. Never been a big fan of
them.
But you may want to take a look at the Dell Precision WS series. I've
had one, and loved it. You can even get a RAID card for it if you
choose.
