 Hello,

is there a MS software for controlling the contacts people are allowed to
have in msn messenger? We have to allow some people access to messenger,
but want them to have just the approved contacts in there. Microsoft
should
have some kind of integration of messenger with AD

 Thanks.

Re: Control of MSN Messenger contacts

2008-06-15 Thread Steven Peck
Office Communications Server is the next generation of Live
Communications Server.

By default if you have an edge server and a proper DNS SIP record you
can communicate with other OCS server installs through federation if
you allow it.

For Public IM connectivity there are two parts. One is the initial
setup and provisioning for the connection. You need a valid cert from
a recognized certificate authority and patience. There is a cost for
the provisioning and that provisioning time frame is not under your
control (no, don't remember the cost). You work through Microsoft for
this. First you 'take control' of your domains name space for IM.
Then the provisioning gets you recognized by MSN, Yahoo and AOL IM
networks. It's on the various networks time frames so no hurrying it
up there. Figure 4-6 weeks after you are ready.

There is a per user license for the connectivity that is fairly cheap
as well. These are not 'floating licenses' but per user that is
allowed to connect to the public IM network.

LCS 2005 sp1 was fun and challenging to learn and implement. I only
hope the OCS documentation is less fragmented and chaotic as I am
getting ready to plan for an upgrade myself :)
