Ugh, nothing like
taking some time off and coming back to a few thousand messages. Anyhow,
FWIW, here's my take on the situation:

trust HP more
than Compaq many times over. I use them for all my major servers and
printers.

HP support, after
youblow through the 'We assume you're an idiot so here are 40 hoops to
jump through' part, is pretty decent generally. Late last year, they
goofed and sent me two CPUs that had different voltages for the same NetServer
and that caused some internal damage. After immediately acknowledging the
mistake, they really stepped to the plate and ended up sending me every internal
part to rebuild the server and a tech to do it. Would they have done it
without my having a full, on-site warranty? Not sure.

I do, however,
remember calling tech support once and telling THEM that a new model of laptop
had shipped the month before then hung up, since if I knew that much more, they
couldn't tell me how to fix it...

Bottom line/Summary:
Most support can use some major bolstering, but until they're willing to pay a
bit more for the frontline staff and internal communication, you're going to get
some major headaches from talking to people whose primary job qualification was
having a pulse

Thus concludes my
tale and cynicism for the day

  I have been
through several mergers of large/Fortune 100 corperations (Union Bank of
  Switzerland and Swiss
Bank/Paine Webber and Kitter Peabody) and can speak from experience when I
say that ther will be large cuts in the workforce of both companies to
eliminate redundant functions. It is just common sense to cut costs by
combining, wherever possible, duplicated functions. Where these cuts will
occur is a matter of speculation, but you can be sure since HP has
controlling interests they will generally get preferential
  treatment.

  You'd better
learn big business. It's a merger, and don't expect to see too many
changes too quickly. Compaq was already making big time changes in
it's product line before this even happened. HP was planning on
getting out of the PC business anyways. A name change could happen,
  but who knows?

  I
  don't appreciate the naive comment
  anyhoo...

  Except its not a
merger. HP purchsed compaq. HP's management now controls the Compaq's
destiny. What this means is that HP will, in order to cut costs, eliminate
all possible redundant functions.I agree it is a good merger, but it is
very naïve to expect nothing to change.

  I
don't think there will be duplicate positions. I expect them to
continue to function as 2 seperate companies. Compaq's name is much
bigger than HP, especially in the server market. I think HP just
wanted a bigger piece of the PC and Server pie, and Compaq wanted the
financial backing of HP's dominance in the peripheral and printer
  market. It's a good merger.

  1.
  HP, Compaq target enterprise,

  2.
  Merger highlights role of HP's
  Fiorina

  While the
merger may not guarantee an improvement in sales/performance, does anyone
see a downside to the merger (other than HP/Compaq employees who will lose
their job when duplicate positions are
  eliminated)?

  Do you expect

LOL, is it pick on happy clowns day today?

Funnily enough, I had thought of saying Dell and Sun and not long after in
an anaysis of the whole thing, Theregister.co.uk suggested that would be a
better 'merger' due to the different strengths and markets each one works
in.

I am NOT suggesting that is going to happen tho.

Here's
my informal Merger vs. Acquisition guide:

If you
really want to tell if it's a merger, then check the makeup of the board, and
where the former CEOs end up.

If one
is Chairman and one is CEO, then you havean equal
merger.

Anything else, and Igenerally view it as an
Acquisition.

In any
event, it won't be successful or useful if all the positions are
retained.

You'd better learn big business. It's a merger, and don't expect
to see too many changes too quickly. Compaq was already making big time
changes in it's product line before this even happened. HP was planning
on getting out of the PC business anyways. A name change could happen,
  but who knows?
  I
don't appreciate the naive comment anyhoo...
  You
saying it's not a merger is naive...

I have been through several mergers of
large/Fortune 100 corperations (Union Bank of Switzerland and Swiss Bank/Paine Webber and Kitter Peabody) and can speak from
experience when I say that ther will be large cuts in the workforce of both
companies to eliminate redundant functions. It is just common sense to cut
costs by combining, wherever possible, duplicated functions. Where these cuts
will occur is a matter of speculation, but you can be sure since HP has
controlling interests they will generally get preferential treatment.

It's not a merger?

You'd better learn big
business. It's a merger, and don't expect to see too many changes too
quickly. Compaq was already making big time changes in it's product line
before this even happened. HP was planning on getting out of the PC
business anyways. A name change could happen, but who knows?

I don't appreciate the
naive comment anyhoo...

Yup.
Doesn't matter if it's merger, purchase or hostile takeover - heads will
roll. Been there, done that. The only people that make out
like bandits are the stationary people (letterhead, business
cards,etc.)

Hopefullythe layoffs won't negatively affect service(it will
of course, 'cause the bright sparks will see 30 HP techs and 30 Compaq techs and
reason somehow that 35 techs can handle the combined load), and the 15k lives +
family members negatively affected willfind gainful employment.
