RE: IP Scanner that finds unused IPs?
Oh Greg - how I wish. We were a two person support department - but after my "staff" left for another job, we went through two months of interviews and when we were finally ready to make an offer, corporate said "sorry, you can't hire anyone". Have two other people in my department but both are devoted to "mission critical" apps we have running the business. They help when they can. Of course, one of those two just had quadruple bypass surgery and is gone for another 7-9 weeks :-) So here's to the economy getting better! RE: IP Scanner that finds unused IPs?
Always question when they tell you you can't use DHCP... If what they mean is that you must assign specific IP's to specific machines - what would you rather do? Manually assign IP's and 3-6 other settings for DNS/WINS/DFGW OR USE reservation tied to a MAC address to just have it all handed down It is a lot easier to just bring up a PC and then cut and past a reservation into DHCP. If DFGW needs to change, etc - change it one place not 100..etc. Most people that say you can't use DHCP - just don't know how to use it! Just remember that if the server/pc is turned off then it will look like the IP is available. When you reissue it then you will get a duplicate IP error message on the screen. RE: IP Scanner that finds unused IPs?
Just a thought. Couldn't you scan what's being used...and then deduct from that what's not in use? There are tools that you could output your data to a comma delimited file and then just do a query on it deleting duplicates. Seems simple enough I think. RE: IP Scanner that finds unused IPs?
Am I oversimplifying the problem to suggest you just reverse your thinking? If it does not show up in one of the tools for finding live IPs, then it would be "not in use". If you have a DHCP server, your best bet is to create an exclusion range to use for static IPs. Even if an IP is not in use right now, it may be contained within a DHCP scope, and could be assigned later, causing no end of headaches down the road. -Tim VanDeWalle Systems Administrator, Product Test Engineer Evergreen Technologies, Inc. -Original Message- From: Shower, David [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2001 8:22 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: IP Scanner that finds unused IPs?
