RE: OT: A very timely movie clip

2008-01-22 Thread Gary Whitten
Also from eastern MA, here. What everyone seems to conveniently forget is
that the NFL itself said that the Patriots gained no advantage from the
taping at all. All the mention of condemning x and ignoring y is generally
sour grapes IMHO. The Patriots have earned this; if you can't give them
some props at least thank them for killing the 72 Dolphin schtik (as someone
else kindly mentioned)

Im not a huge/regular football fan/watcher, so I have a question for you:

Is what they did (or rather got caught doing) really that outrageous? Don't
teams watch each other all the time to try to guess hand signs, etc, in all
sports? Heck, you see people covering thier mouths while giving plays on
the sideline all the time.

No flames please. Im not defending the Pats coaching staff - Im asking an
honest question to those that are bigger sports fans than I.

RE: OT: A very timely movie clip

2008-01-22 Thread Jim Majorowicz
Oh sure. Hell, teams accuse each other of using lip readers watching the
guy calling the play all the time. That's why you see coaches wearing
headseats covering their mouths when they're talking in them. There are
rules that govern this stuff. Teams are allow only X frequencies for
communication. No other team is allowed to use that frequency and being
caught using them is punished, etc. but it seems that everyone looks for
that "edge."

I didn't know about the rules governing the use of cameras until this
"scandal" busted. I guess the home team is allowed one "extra" camera in an
endzone angle, and one camera on the 50. The league ensures that both teams
have access to all other film generated during a game ("game films"), and
the home team is allowed to generate their own game film from the extra
cameras, in theory so they could focus on one or two players at a specific
time. All other filming is not allowed.

It wasn't so much that they were trying to intercept and determine the play
calling signals for use during the game, but that they were filming them to
interpret them for the next time they played that team. It wasn't so much
that they were trying to catch the signals (Not technically against the
rules) but that they broke a specific rule to do it. A team is only allowed
so many cameras to film a game and they are allowed only certain angles. On
whole, was it cheating? Yes. They got caught, the camera was seized. Was
it a big deal? Only to people who hate the Patriots.

Personally, I look at it like NASCAR. The teams there are always looking at
ways to bend the rules to find an edge to get that extra 2 or 3 miles per

No, but they got caught. Then they shrug off Rodney Harrison's drug use
and Randy Moss's "accidental" woman beating but yet condemn Roger
Clemens and anyone else who have been accused but not proven guilty
(yet). My own opinion.

Im not a huge/regular football fan/watcher, so I have a question for
you:

Is what they did (or rather got caught doing) really that outrageous?
Don't teams watch each other all the time to try to guess hand signs,
etc, in all sports? Heck, you see people covering thier mouths while
giving plays on the sideline all the time.

No flames please. Im not defending the Pats coaching staff - Im asking
an honest question to those that are bigger sports fans than I.

TIA!
