Re: OT: Your Friday Night Wiring p0rn

2010-09-27 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
Depends on my availability. But, honestly, I have fixed so many other
peoples wiring mistakes that its one of those few things that I would truly
rather do myself. Most issues I find are at the punch - at work and at
home.

Plus, I find it one of the few relaxing yet monotonous things to do. But,
I've been a telco nerd since I was a kid, so I guess that goes with the
territory.

In a pinch we have made our own patch cables if we don't have the right size we
need but not for any infrastructure cabling. We only use the green and orange
pair though cause that crap is annoying.

RE: OT: Your Friday Night Wiring p0rn

2010-09-27 Thread Maglinger, Paul
No! When I started here people were crimping RJ45 connectors on solid
conductor wire. Works for awhile, until you unplug and plug them in a
few times, then the insulation loosens up and you get intermittent
connections. Bad, very bad.

I *think* that's a cable TV headend or similar IP-to-coax distribution
center. So not much call for new runs on the main distribution frame
there.

RE: OT: Your Friday Night Wiring p0rn

2010-09-27 Thread Don Guyer
Last time I ran cables, about 3 years ago, it was for a private
homeowner (multi-Million $$ house). It was about 50 data runs, 25
telecom runs and 15 or so coax. We terminated all data & telecom, cable
company did the coax. That was a 2-3 week job. Some of the runs were 4
stories, communicating with coworker via walkie-talkie (cell didn't work
in basement location where patch panel was). That may have scared me
straight from ever doing cabling again.

I stopped pulling and terminating when I left the brokenring world
with cat3. I can kinda sorta terminate 100mbit, but I have never had
to tools to verify/qualify, and it's dirty nasty work.

Hire it out - I've got better things to do and I only hire folks who
can give me a map and certification list.

We hire that out. We've got a guy do does an outstanding job and is very
affordable. He knows our cabling infrastructure better than we do, because he
has been working with us for years. And because cabling is all he does, he's an
expert at it-far more skilled than we could become by just pulling a cable here
and there.

I *think* that's a cable TV headend or similar IP-to-coax distribution
center. So not much call for new runs on the main distribution frame
there.

I terminate my own when give the opportunity. I gots mad punch-down tools,
and mad skillez. Plus, I gotz the meters to certify.

But seriously, yep I do my own when I can, because I beleive I do it better
than anyone I've ever hired. Not that I havent seen as good if not better,
but just not what I am usually allowed to budget these days.

2010-09-25 Thread James Kerr
It is a nice job, give it a few years and it will look like crap. I
was just repunching a wire last night in a wire closet we did about 9
years ago. It looks like hell now. I wished I could redo it all over
again but then I thought about how much work that involves and my sanity
returned.
