RE: OTish Phone to email phish.

2010-10-12 Thread Ziots, Edward
I basically don't give them any information, if they aren't the Account
rep I have on file, and if its for a new project we have initated with
them. I have basically seen the same on my end also, with the amount of
HP hardware we got here.

I have had phone based phishing attempts several times in the last few
months. Usually they call as a member o four HP Accounts Team and our
 referred them to me to
get further information. We do have an HP Account Team with a TAM and
other support people (We have 4 HP Superdomes and a decent size blade
infrastructure) but I know them and they have the appropriate contact
information on file. But seriously, the CIO of my company referring
people to me? Some project manager I do not have a working relationship
with? If they had wanted me to give some person information, I would
have gotten an email from them directing me to.

I have had requests for more information on AV we are using, printing,
database vendors, etc.

On one call I was bored so I kept them on the line with vague
generalizations while they tried name after name of who 'really'
referred me to them. Two who were no longer with the company.

RE: OTish Phone to email phish.

2010-10-12 Thread Ziots, Edward
Ditto,

Also there has been an increase of phishing/spear-phishing via view
contacts on Linked-in and other professional groups, basically with all
that we are putting on our Linked In profiles is giving the phishers
plenty of ammo about us our companies and what we do and who we are, it
might not be us that they take advantage of, but it might be
less-suspecting colleagues.

Just keep that in mind, when you put information up on your linked In,
Facebook, Myspace, etc etc accounts.

Never heard of this one before, very interesting.

Working a little late the phone rings with someone looking for one of my
co-workers. It is 'Chase' that wants to confirm his shipping address,
they have a fed ex package for him. They give me the correct address and
say they want to email him the tracking information. They give the wrong
email address. None of it felt right so I just said sure, email it
there. Sure enough 10 minutes later we get a hit on that email address
from a Gmail account. Called the co-worker and he has never done
business with Chase and was not expecting any packages.

I messed up. I should have created the email address real quick to see
what the payload was.
