+1 to this. My feeling is that the name Windows 7 is to get away from the
"Vista" marketing fiasco.

I'm a fan of Windows 7 as well.

But I do think the differences from Vista to 7 are not that great. It's just
much better with fewer resources. Feels like this should be "Vista R2"... Not
quite a new version, but slightly more than a service pack.

I do like the new start bar.

RE: Win7 beta on IdeaPad

2009-02-18 Thread Ken Schaefer
Yup - worked through three versions of Win 7 - runs like a champ. (Dell Mini 9
- upgraded to 2GB of RAM)

Also have it on my main work laptop - main issue is not being able to get my
inbuilt Dell 5520 WWAN card working. But perceived performance wise (i.e. UI
interaction) is way ahead of Vista. The new service controller that can
demand-start services I think has something to do with this. A lot less stuff
starting up when you boot the machine and first logon.

Cheers
Ken

I believe Ken installed it on his dell mini from a posting on the list a month
back or so. I have it on a fairly weak Precision M70 and it way out performs
Vista on the same hardware.

Windows 7 has been quite impressive, even for a beta. I have found that
it is easier to navigate in and perform daily tasks. So much that I
find myself clicking the title bar, in open windows in XP, and then drag
them to the top of the screen expecting them to maximize. I think that
when W7 comes out, that XP will become a thing of the past.

RE: Win7 beta on IdeaPad

2009-02-18 Thread Michael B. Smith
Well, my main production desktops are still on Vista, but I've got two older
laptops running Win7 beta, and I love it.

I've got a couple of things that don't work in Win7 (AT&T Global Network
Client and the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client), but everything else is VERY
happy, and I can run those two in either Vista or XP VMs.

While you could consider Win7 as "Vista SP3", I wouldn't (I'm running the
Vista SP2 beta on my production computers). Win7 has some key usability
improvements over and above Vista, exclusive of the performance
improvements. The taskbar interface is much improved, for example.

Within a given release (i.e., XP or Vista) while Microsoft fixes bugs and
sometimes introduces new functionality (think: Windows Firewall in XP sp2),
they don't tend to change the user interface. Win7 has MANY user interface
enhancements that make it easier to use.

No, but I'm dying to know what people think of it. I still need
To get a hold of a Beta copy. Microsoft gave me a serial number for it,
then apologized that the downloads are no longer available.
At first glance, looks like Vista In a new dress.
