need a server as well.

Those I've found so far offer trials that blow up after a trial period,

are linux enhancements...

Try the DAV route if you can, its super easy for your clients to access and 
integrates nicely with the AD security model.

Have you tried webDAV over SSL?

It's built into IIS, and the WebDAV client is built into pretty much all modern 
OS's.
