Have not done this upgrade but in the past you usually need to also update the
remote agents.

Anyone use Backup Exec here? I've just applied the latest patches and am
seeing now that when I create a new job, the remote agents aren't able to be
discovered. A bug perhaps? Odd behaviour at any rate. I am at version 13.0
rev 4164 64bit.

Yep, upgraded the agents too. Funny that the existing jobs see the other

Actually, now that I think about it I see that behavior quite often in that
softwareagents and computers not on the list and you have to manually add
them. I just dismiss it as the Symantec effect.

RE: Backup exec 2010 r2

2010-11-24 Thread Steven M. Caesare
Dude.

Many of the comments in this list are often:

1) Suggestions that will get your ass out of a sling in the future

2) Ideas you can tuck away for future implementation

3) Damn good best practices

4) An indication that your initial post was rather incomplete and
left us with no evidence you had done your due diligence and thus left
us with no choice but to assume you were as clueless about
implementation as you were to posting to mailing lists.

Now maybe _YOU_ get your panties in a wad when somebody points out an
issue that you might be able to rectify PRIOR to it becoming a problem.
The rest of us have thicker skin and recognize the value therein.

So... chill.

Wow, I guess it’s true …

No good deed ever goes unpunished.

The expressed skepticism *could* prompt you to test a restore *BEFORE* it
possibly proves to be a critical failure to VERIFY that the restore
function works as you expect.

I have in the past seen folks lose their jobs from inability to perform a
restore within claimed timeframes for failure to test prior to critical
needs, where exceeding the planned and communicated restore window had a
major negative impact on business operations.

What exactly is your reason for participating in this listserv ?

I'd love to test it but the LTO loader broke. Can't even back up at this point
and can't get funding to replace it

All the 12.5 restores worked great though FWIW.

So, how does the restore time compare to 12.5? I've seen so many

see it's failed but logging, verification, etc failed to identify the
failures.

Since when is asking for facts about your process fanboism?
I asked about restore time. It's a key consideration, whether it's one file or
all of them.
I asked you to explain your testing process. I even explained my experience
which has led me to be wary of testing only backups...

The fact that you demurred and then proceeded to 1) mispell MBS and 2) call me
a fanboi and 3) and assume that I or any frequent list contributors would be
offended by such an assertion illustrates an immaturity on the order of a
typical five year old.

Define tested thoroughly?

So, how does the restore time compare to 12.5? I've seen so many orgs/people
say, yeah, I'm backing up and they go to their backup only to see it's failed
but logging, verification, etc failed to identify the failures.

It's as fast as backing up your transactions to /dev/null.

Just for a benchmark.

I haven't used it for anything more then backing up some VM's, but get about
50mb/s going across the local lan gb backbone.

Its good stuff, but it is also quite expensive. If you need to be able to
monitor server sprawl (if that is a problem for you) then I would recommend
it.

Needless to say, it is a luxury, not a requirement. In my little ideal

2010-11-18 Thread Kramer, Jack
Some experience with vRanger – a little bit of a pain to set up, amazing when
it works; however, SAN or NAS issues cripple it. Also has problems with very
large (1TB+) VMs – the ESX server has a tendency to get stuck forever at taking
the snapshot of the VM and you'll lose some performance not to mention a failed
backup or twelve. File level restore of Windows guests is an amazing feature
though.

Anyone here able to speak about something called VEEAM? Got a consultant who
wants to get it for us to use to manage a couple virtualized servers. They said
we'd need the paid-for version of VMWARE. :-(

Hijack - Veeam - was RE: Backup exec 2010 r2

2010-11-15 Thread Raper, Jonathan - Eagle
Veeam is good for monitoring and mapping your vmware environment. It (Veeam
reporter, at least) is licensed per processor (not per core) if you're over 6
procs.

Its good stuff, but it is also quite expensive. If you need to be able to
monitor server sprawl (if that is a problem for you) then I would recommend it.

Needless to say, it is a luxury, not a requirement. In my little ideal world, I
wouldn't want to run without it. But could I? Sure thing.

No, I think the idea was that it would keep two boxes synchronous, so that if
