Yes I meant DL, anyhow I got a new drive pulled the old one and hot-swapped the new drive it rebuilt in less than 1 hour, back up with no problems, thanks for all the suggestions. Not sure about GL, but DL G5 is hotswap (I suspect that GL will be the same). For re-assurance, do a backup prior to pulling the failed drive. Since it's a DC, and you have others, it's not a huge deal (unless you have applications hard coded to use this DC - plenty of those around IME). a) Check firmware etc (per suggestions) b) Transfer the FSMO roles first (if they are held by this machine) c) Do a backup d) Pull the failed drive. You can try a reseat per suggestions. Otherwise plug in the new drive If everything goes bad, then reinstall Windows and do a dcpromo Cheers Ken From: Stefan Jafs [mailto:stefan.j...@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, 28 October 2010 4:27 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Replacing drive in Raid 1 (+ 0) I have an HP GL380 G5 server with 2 drives for the OS, it's now telling me that drive 1 is about to fail! 2 months after the end of Warranty! Depends on how the RAID is setup. You should have hotswap capable drives thereyou can swap with the system on and the rebuild would be automatic. Yes, it should rebuild, and you should be fine. Its been a while since I've touched HP, but you should have a GUI loaded on the system that will show you RAID rebuild progress. With it being an AD server, I'd double check what FSMO roles that server is running prior to doing anything, just so you know what you're up against if it blows up in your face. Jonathan L. RE: Replacing drive in Raid 1 (+ 0)
Try removing the drive and then plugging it back in. I've had Dell RAIDs report a failed drive but re-seating the drive resolves the issue. I think what happens is that over time the contacts develop a little oxide and the connections weakens. Re-seating the drive scrapes off the oxide and the drive rebuilds and works fine. Same thing happens on network cables that are plugged in for years and then mysteriously stop working. Unplug/replug and the problem is fixed. -- Bob Hartung Wisco Industries, Inc. 736 Janesville St. Oregon, WI 53575 Tel: (608) 835-3106 x215 Fax: (608) 835-7399 e-mail: bhartung(at)wiscoind.com _ From: Raper, Jonathan - Eagle [mailto:jra...@eaglemds.com] To: NT System Admin Issues [mailto:ntsysad...@lyris.sunbelt-software.com] Sent: Wed, 27 Oct 2010 16:05:15 -0500 Subject: RE: Replacing drive in Raid 1 (+ 0) +1 We’ve also re-scanned arrays (on HP, specifically) and seen the array come back as healthy with no errors – and run that way for years after the fact.
