Subject: Windows XP Service Not Starting

Hello

I have a windows XP user who was issued a new machine in the last weeek
started to experience the following problems: Cant UNC or map to any
drives can log via VNC and troubleshoot the system.

i can see the workstation service has stopped and the
following errors are in the event log

first error = Could not load Rdbss device driver. Event ID: 5727
Followed by = Could not load RDR device driver. Event ID: 5727
and then = The Workstation service terminated with service-specific
error
2250 (0x8CA).

I checked all over the Net others are reporting the same symptoms but no
one has a resolution.

Windows XP SP2 connected to an 03 domain

RDR is the network redirector. If that and the Workstation service
is failing, you've got something really basic broken.

Without knowing more, my first guess would be malware -- maybe some
kind of Internet worm. A lot of them target holes in core system
services, which in turn often crash when exploited.
