RE: XP SP3 Available for DL

2008-04-29 Thread Carl Houseman
Address bar still available in Vista SP1. The regulatory agency asked about
this too late to get it removed from Vista SP1 but soon enough for XP SP3?
That doesn't seem quite right as both were being worked on at the same time.

Not to mention, what exactly is being regulated and why would MS bend over
so easily?

One negative on SP3.

It permanently removes the address bar from the task bar at the bottom of
the screen.

After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 Beta, the Address Bar feature
will be removed from the Taskbar
The Address Bar feature will not be present in Windows XP Service Pack 3.
This change is in response to a regulatory request and is present beginning
with Windows XP Service Pack 3 Beta.

It's because the update link posted to is from the Windows Update
automatic system, rather than the manual updates one gets from the
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads sub-site. WU uses a separate
server farm, and the files often (usually? always?) have funky
download names.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the linked file is a different
packaging of Win XP SP3, one designed for WU. Maybe needing separate
downloads, or lacking certain files, or whatever. Or maybe not.
Either way, I'm waiting for the "regular" release via MS Download
Center. :)

Hmm, never used that anyway, but good to know, in case someone around

One negative on SP3.

It permanently removes the address bar from the task bar at the bottom
of the screen.

After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 Beta, the Address Bar feature
will be removed from the Taskbar
The Address Bar feature will not be present in Windows XP Service Pack
3. This change is in response to a regulatory request and is present
beginning with Windows XP Service Pack 3 Beta.

smoothly and the properties read "Service Pack 3" after installation.

Center. :)

2008-04-29 Thread Terry Dickson
My assistant found the ISO image on Microsoft site yesterday afternoon.
I think in the TechNet section. He downloaded it and I have started
testing it on one machine today. I plan on testing it on 3-4 more by
the end of the week if there are no problems on the first.

Unfortunately my assistant is not in the rest of the week to ask him
exactly where he got it.

Still nothing found at download.microsoft.com

It is at least 12 hours early. I can wait another 12...
