Re: [nycwireless] Secure Wifi is the Norm for Public Hotspots inKorea

2004-06-14 Thread Jim Thompson
Any half-decent 802.1x (or better WPA) supplicant will deal with
multiple networks. The open source one(s) do,
as well as the ones from Apple (for OSX) and Microsoft (for nearly
everything that counts).

now that hostap and madwifi both support WPA, perhaps its time that
community wireless leads
the way to a secure, authenticated network (though we should throw the
logs away, as is the norm.)

And heck, make it where anyone can join (get credentials).Free
wins, so community wireless
could claim a much larger number of (ahem) "subscribers".

Then perhaps we could enable "roaming" between all the CW networks, via
"freenetworks.org", or similar, so that when someone from Austin is
visiting NYC (or visa versa) they still have free access.

Then we could all have a ton of fun as the media writes up "community
wireless" as anonymous and secure, while the "for pay" folks are
labeled "big brother" and "open to eavesdropping", as well as
"expensive".

Wanna change the world (a little more)?

Hey Anthony,
I agree with Jim on this one... I would be hesitant to install

Is a different client app needed for the various networks, or
can it just be re-configured per network?

I've been suggesting this (using 802.1x) for years. No "client app"
needed.

there's a screen shot as well of the splash page, but not the client
because its PC-only and my Mac doesnt run Windowz
