[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn MEW GULL - YES
All, Today at about 2:00pm I saw the adult MEW GULL swimming just offshore from the bike path on the Belt Pkwy. This was about 1/3 mi west of the ballfields previously described by Shane Blodgett. It was foraging with several dozen Ring-billed Gulls, but it disappeared when I went back to the ballfields to notify other birders who were present. We could not refind it for the next 30 minutes when I left. There were about 400-500 Ring-billed Gulls present from the ballfields back west towards the Verrazzano Bridge so picking this bird out could take some patience. The spot was opposite 19th Av. Google Earth: 40° 35.934'N 74° 0.474'W. There were 5 Purple Sandpipers foraging on the rocks at the site, too and one Bonaparte's Gull roosting on the ballfield. best, Mike -- Michael J. [nysbirds-l] Dovekie - Hither Hills SP
At Hither Hills SP, Montauk, dovekie was found today around 4PM - at the water line - by Joan Becker, Richard Becker, Robin Fishman and Eileen Schwinn. The bird appeared "waterlogged" and was taken to The Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons, in Hampton Bays. We were told it was the third dovekie to be brought to the center today. All birds were thought to be "non- water repellant", perhaps the result of the strong winds and rain from yesterday's storm. One bird was found by a local boater and the other along the beach in Westhampton. Perhaps tomorrow birders can be on the look-out along local ocean beaches for any other washed-ashore birds. Earlier in the day(11AM), the Black Guillemot was seen inside Bullhead Bay, close to the broken bulkheading along Sebonac Inlet Road. It still was in the company of four long-tailed ducks. [nysbirds-l] Eurasion Wigeon in Setauket & Sunken Meadow SP yesterday
This morning I took a trip to see if I could spot the Eurasion Wigeon in Setauket. I got there and scoped almost all of the bay without luck. Many American Wigeon were out and about though. Then as I was leaving I passed a small cove and in it fed a flock of about forty American Wigeon and amongst the flock was the Eurasian Wigeon. Yesterday(December 26) I visited Sunken Meadow State Park. The highlights included a female Northern Harrier hunting over the Dunes near Field 3, a single Killdeer along the edge of the exposed mudflats, a cold Snowy Egret hunting in the Inner Marsh, and 32 Northern Gannet plunge-diving on the Long Island Sound. I also enjoyed watching a immature Yellow-bellied Sapsucker foraging very close to me on a tree. [nysbirds-l] Guillemot continues
Sean Sime just called me to report that the Black Guillemot continues at Sebonac Inlet in Suffolk County. It flew in at first light then disappeared in the flock. He found it again a little before 9 AM and it is there now (9:20 am).
