[nysbirds-l] Possible new addition to the NY list

Hempstead Lake State Park, April 1

Two Lesser Pterodactyls were observed flying overhead this afternoon. While the 
ID is not in doubt, experts have been consulted to get the latest definitive 
scoop on whether these flyers are Reptiles or Dinosaurs.  If they agree on the 
latter (flying dinosaurs are definitely classified as BIRDS), the record will 
be submitted to NYSARC for addition to the NYS List.

 Highlights of reports received March 25 through April 1 from  the 
Niagara Frontier Region include BARNACLE GOOSE, GR.  WHITE-FR. GOOSE 
and GREATER YELLOWLEGS.


 March 27, on the BOS field trip to the Lake Ontario Plains,  a 
BARNACLE GOOSE at Johnson Creek Road and Hartland-Somerset  Townline. 
Most likely the same individual that was at the  Iroquois Refuge last 
week, about 10 miles to the south.


 Also on the field trip, hundreds of RED-NECKED GREBES on  Lake 
Ontario with HORNED GREBE and RED-THROATED LOON, plus  GREATER SCAUP, 
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, LONG-TAILED DUCK, COMMON  GOLDENEYE and abundant 
RED-BR. MERGANSERS. Waterfowl in the  fields included AMERICAN WIGEON, 
RING-NECKED DUCK, NORTHERN  PINTAIL and GREEN-WINGED TEAL. On the 
Niagara-Orleans  Countyline at Route 18, 2 SNOW GEESE, CACKLING GOOSE 
and L.  BLACK-B. GULL. Also migrant hawks throughout the day -  
NORTHERN HARRIER, SHARP-SH. HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK, RED-

 SHOULDERED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL and  PEREGRINE FALCON.

 March 30 in Niagara County, a GR. WHITE-FR. GOOSE on  Dickersonville 
Road south of Youngstown-Wilson Road in the  Town of Porter. An escaped 
RUDDY SHELDUCK has been reported  several times at this location. Also, 
multiple reports of a  CANADA GOOSE with a white body and black neck at 
Ring-neck  and Schoolhouse Marsh in the Iroquois Refuge.


 In the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, March 28, first  report of 
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, in the marsh at Griswold Road  and Route 77. Also 
50 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS in the Tonawanda  Wildlife Management Area.


 March 29, 10 GREAT EGRETS, a high count of March, at the  heronry on 
Motor Island in the upper Niagara River. Also the  29th, OSPREY on the 
utility pole nest off Ditch Road, near  the Tonawanda Wildlife 
Management Area.


 Arriving this week in the Town of Wilson - EASTERN PHOEBE,  BROWN 
CREEPER, WINTER WREN and 2 FOX SPARROWS.


 Before sunset on March 25 in the Town of Amherst, 88 low  flying 
TURKEY VULTURES, apparently searching for a night  roost, at Main 
Street and Eggert Road.


 Other reports this week - From Cattaraugus County, EASTERN  
MEADOWLARK amid the snow patches in the Town of Hinsdale,  and BALD 
EAGLE and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Swamp Road in  Randolph. On the lower 
Niagara River at Lewiston, LITTLE  GULL among the LONG-TAILED DUCKS. 
And, on Grand Island,  GREAT HORNED OWL at the BOS Sanctuary on Love 
Road.

[nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- Early White-eyed Vireo, Suffolk County

I took advantage of this gorgeous day and went over to Sunken Meadow State 
Park(Suffolk County) this morning.  I birded from 8:00am-12:00pm on the Inner 
Marsh trail, down near the Golf Course, to the backwaters of Sunken Meadow 
Creek.  The best bird seen was a very early White-eyed Vireo in the expansive 
thickets about three quarters of a mile down the trail.  He was actively 
foraging in and out of the thickets.  Waterfowl were quite plentiful today with 
15 species recorded, the best being a drake Canvasback, 2 Lesser Scaup, 7 
Northern Shovelers, 27 Green-winged Teal, 12 Wood ducks, 9 Hooded Mergansers, 
and 11 Common Mergansers(still lingering).  The full bird list from today is 
below.
