[nysbirds-l] April 20th: Hooded Warbler in Riverside Park (Manhattan)

2010-04-20 Thread Karen Fung
Hi All,
Jeff Nulle just called to tell me he had beautiful singing male Hooded
Warbler in the Women's Grove in Riverside Park around 2pm. The
Women's Grove is the wood chip trail behind (east of) the Drip that
starts at 116th Street and continues north, past the tennis courts.
This area is also known as the Riverside Bird Sanctuary.

Enter the wood chip path at 116th and continue north, past the green
podium on your left. Soon afterwards on your right there is a large
fallen tree that has been completely uprooted. The bird was singing
in a green patch in that area. I would guess that the equivalent
cross street would be 118-119th Street. If you encounter the paved
path coming down from Riverside Drive, you have gone too far.

Good luck if you go!

Karen Fung

[nysbirds-l] Woodcocks at JBWR

2010-04-20 Thread Robert Bate
Yesterday at 8PM we heard and saw a American Woodcock at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge in Queens, NY. They often appear at the edges of the brush
in the mowed area just south of the parking lot as the light begins to
disappear.
