[nysbirds-l] Rvsd Church Peregrine
Rita and I haven't been to the neighborhood of the Riverside Church (Riverside Drive & 120th St., Manhattan) in quite a while but we were brought there this afternoon by a "Music Before 1800" concert at 121st St. & Broadway (medieval French, in this case). Having the luck to find a parking space right away, we had time to walk around the Church and gaze up at its ornate tower, hoping to see at least one of the resident peregrines. As the time of the concert drew near, we had to move on, without success. As we were leaving the scene at about 3:30, we heard a very familiar sound: a "cacking" peregrine. The loudness of this sound belied the fact that it was coming from hundreds of feet overhead. What seemed to be a female was drifting in the wind (with only the very occasional wing beat) toward the Church and then toward the Hudson, yelling all the way. "What's bothering her"? we wondered. "Looking for her mate? Upset by a red-tail intrusion?" But we saw no other raptor in the air. A mystery. (B.F.)
[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach to Captree State Parks, Sunday, November 7, 2010
We birded the barrier strip from Jones Beach S.P., Nassau Co. to Captree S.P., Suffolk Co. today and did pretty well with the uncommon birds found there this past week. We saw the Common Ground-Dove in two locations at Captree, once along the road to the south parking lot that overlooks the inlet, and once on the grass near the green buoy by the entry toll booths. We did not find the previously reported Western Kingbird, but we were told it had been reported early in the morning. Along the north side of the easternmost parking lot (where the ground-dove has also been seen) we found an immature White-crowned Sparrow feeding with the White-throated Sparrows. At Jones Beach, along with many other birders, we saw the Lark Sparrow on the north side of the employee parking lot west of Parking Field 6. Also at Jones Beach we saw the Northern Shrike perched on the east side of the boardwalk at the Roosevelt Nature Center at about 11:15 am. We did not find the Marbled Godwit at the Coast Guard station, but Tom Burke told us he had seen it there early in the morning. [nysbirds-l] South Shore Barrier Beach This Morning
There was a good morning flight at Robert Moses State Park today, highlighted by flyby American Pipits (30), Pine Siskin (275), American Goldfinch (600), and Red-winged Blackbird (1200). On the ground there were good numbers of Dark-eyed Junco and White-throated Sparrow. Highlights included a late Blackpoll Warbler feeding on the lawn with Yellow-rumped Warblers at Field 3. At Zach's Bay the previously reported Lark Sparrow had relocated to the entrance to the small parking lot west of JBSP Field 6 where he was being observed by a group of upstate of birders who had come down for the weekend to see the Common Ground-Dove.. An additional Blackpoll Warbler was feeding jn the pines to the southwest of the small parking lot. In the afternoon I went north to Sunken Meadow State Park to run (perhaps inspired by the NYC Marathon) and observed over 400 Canada Geese in the playing fields east of the entrance road. Among the Canada's was my FOS Cackling Goose.
