[nysbirds-l] Lark Sparrow, Central Park, NYC 9/13
Tuesday, 13 September 2011 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City The 1st-year (but rather brightly-plumaged) Lark Sparrow was again being seen on the south slope of the Great Hill, which is just north of the Pool, and closest to the West 103 St. park entrance. If coming from that small entrance, walk in and immediately up steps on your left, and once on the level paved path, look off to the right, where a lawn area is bordered below by some patchy woods and a few low (2 ft.) wire fences. As of 6:30 pm the sparrow was in the eastern edges of this lawn, actually in a bit of brushy woods edge but visible from the lawn, where a half-dozen or so other birders were gathered watching. Thanks to Tom Perlman for finding and to a number of others for passing word - Starr Saphir's birding group was able to see this bird in the late morning, and I was able to get a few photos thanks to the rapid directions of Malcolm Morris and K. Wada, present when I came up at noon. Also seeing the bird at that hour were Ken Chaya and John Wittenberg. I hope it sticks around a few days, and that others who try also get such good views. In my own wanderings, it was otherwise unremarkable in terms of migration this day. Good luck, Tom Fiore, Manhattan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Lark Sparrow Update
I thought I should elaborate on the location of this bird, since Malcolm had called me earlier with details but I'm at work, and was not at my desk until now. The "balancing rock" is just north of the Pool, which is the small pond at the north end, on the west side of the park. Enter the park at CPW and 103rd, take the paved path up the steps on your left, the balancing rock will be on your right. Tom Perlman just texted me that the bird was last seen in the grass of the up slope lawn between the small tree and stump, but was also spending time in the wood chips near the the stump on the down slope side of the fence. Good luck if you go. Hopefully it will stick around for all of us to see.
