[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Floyd Bennett Field

2012-03-02 Thread Martin Carney
I saw the Northern Shrike today at approximately 4:10 p.m. at Floyd Bennett
Field. The bird was located approximately 300 yards south of the Model
Airplane stand, across the runway from the stand, in a tall tree in the brush
area.

Happy birding,
Martin Carney
Bronx, NY

[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, March 2nd
at 7:00pm. The highlights of this tape are RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD,
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, EURASIAN FORM OF
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, SNOWY OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and AUDUBON'S FORM OF
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.

Unfortunately, not much has changed recently in our area. COMMON
GRACKLES and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS have arrived in numbers, SNOWY OWLS
seem to have withdrawn or are not being reported, and AMERICAN
WOODCOCK are now displaying in certain areas. Their activity should
be on the increase in the next few weeks. COMMON RAVEN presence (and
in some cases nesting activity) also continues at a few Long Island
locations, including in Nassau County and out in Hampton Bays, as well
as in the Bronx and New Rochelle in southern Westchester County, their
long anticipated expansion into southern New York now definitely a
reality.

On the rarities front, in New York City the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD remains
at the American Museum of Natural History. Look for it on either side
of the entrance to the planetarium on the south side of West 81st
Street, just west of Central Park West. Watch for the RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER around the northwestern corner of the Hallett Sanctuary in
the southeastern corner of Central Park. Look for the YELLOW-BREASTED
CHAT in the southwestern corner of Union Square, just east of 14th
Street.

The adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Van Cortlandt Park in the
Bronx was present again on the Parade Ground last Saturday.

To see the drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the West Pond at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge, you need to arrive early or stay late. The bird
overnights on the pond, but tends to fly out to the Bay by 7:00am or
even earlier, generally not returning until very late in the
afternoon. Otherwise, look for it with Common Goldeneye in the Bay,
west of the West Pond.

The NORTHERN SHRIKE at Floyd Bennett Field continues to be quite
elusive. Watch for it especially along the woodland edges around Area
G, where it was seen last Sunday and Tuesday.

An overwintering ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER remains along the corridor at
Kissena Park in Queens.

A Eurasian form of GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen last Saturday on Smith
Pond in Rockville Centre, with three WOOD DUCKS now also arriving
locally at Hempstead Lake State Park.

The Audubon's form of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was still present Sunday
at Sunken Meadow State Park. Look for it especially along the south
side of the canal, south of the easternmost parking lot, usually with
chickadees and Yellow-rumped Warblers.

At Jones Beach West End, lingering birds featured the overwintering
PIPING PLOVER and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER near the base of the West End
jetty on Monday, with a RAZORBILL also in the inlet, while arrivals
featured three TREE SWALLOWS Monday and EASTERN BLUEBIRD today.

In Patchogue recently, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a PINE WARBLER
were present at least through Tuesday in plantings along the south end
of Patchogue Lake.

One SNOWY OWL still in the region was seen on Hick's Island today, off
the end of Flying Point Road in Napeague, where the LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL also continues. The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was
also still at the Deep Hollow Ranch off Route 27, east of the town of
Montauk, today.

To phone in reports on Long Island, call Tony Lauro at (631) 734-4126,
or weekdays call Tom Burke at (212) 372-1483.

This service is sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the
National Audubon Society. Thank you for calling.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Ring-billed Gull band report

2012-03-02 Thread Steve Walter
This prompted me to report a couple of band sightings that I was tardy with.
Since there seems to be some interest in this, here is the info.

One bird, photographed by me at Bay Park (Nassau co.) Feb. 12, is part of
the same study and banded at the Quebec site given below, an adult female
banded 6/9/2010 (Blue leg band LMA; Fed band number: 0954-17314).

A second bird (second winter) was photographed by me at Mill River Park
(along the same river that runs past Bay Park), also Feb. 12. This one is
part of a Massachusetts study
(http://www.mass.gov/dcr/watersupply/watershed/study/index.htm ). It was
banded 10/29/2010 at Walmart, Northborough, MA as a juvenile (Orange
wing-tags: A497; Red leg band: 067; Federal band: 0994-04260).

If anyone cares, pictures of the bands can be seen at
http://www.stevewalternature.com/downloads/ So I'm just dying to say that
birds were disturbed in order to get pictures. Yea, when I stopped my car
and rolled down the window, the gulls left the spots they were comfortable
in and flew toward me and surrounded the car.

[nysbirds-l] NY Hurricane Irene archives?

2012-03-02 Thread eyeflight16
I am writing up a little report for myself about Hurricane Irene, and I was
wondering if anybody could tell me where I might find access to the archives of
this list before 2012 so I can see the reports of the hurricane birds that
week. I went on to the Surfbirds archives, but I could not seem to find any
archives for this list before this year. Thanks.

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl and other over-wintering birds at Montauk

2012-03-02 Thread Anthony Collerton
Did a fair amount a sea-watching at the basic Montauk spots today (Ditch
Plains, Camp Hero, Montauk Point, Culloden Point) hoping for late alcids or
other seabird migration. Lots of scoters, Common Eider, loons, and Horned
Grebes (29) but few Gannets and not a single alcid of any species. Not
much sign of seabird migration in general ... oh well, building karma .

Did better with the various over-wintering birds though with SNOWY OWL at
Hick's Island (sitting on a log right on the shore), LESSER BLACk-BACKED
GULL at Lazy Point, PURPLE SANDPIPER at Montauk Point and GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Deep Hollow Ranch. The Chipping Sparrow that
over-wintered at Montauk Point is also seems to have made it and has now
molted.

An Eastern Bluebird
 was
seen at 10:00, this morning, on the westbound loop of the parkway at
Jones Beach West End. It was working its way east along the parkway
near the turnoff for the entrance to the Jones Beach Coast Guard

[nysbirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird at AMNH and miscellaneous

2012-03-02 Thread Joseph DiCostanzo
The Rufous Hummingbird continues at the Rose Center, American Museum of
Natural History on West 81st Street, just off Central Park West. Yesterday
(March 1) Sean Sime and I saw it on the east side of the main entrance, just
after 1:00 pm. It is now two weeks short of three months since the bird was
discovered here!

In an unrelated note of the arrival of spring, a Great Egret was in the
small bay at the north end of Inwood Hill Park in northern Manhattan
yesterday morning. This is the earliest I have seen the species here. Common
Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds returned last week.
