[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike continues at Calverton

2012-03-10 Thread Seth Ausubel
The Northern Shrike present since December in Calverton is still there. Mary
Normandia and I saw it along the fence line at the northeast corner of the
large field that is east of Hulse Lading Road and north of Route 25A. No sign
of the Mountain Bluebird.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird, Hog Hole, Tompkins County

2012-03-10 Thread Christopher Wood
Greetings,

There was a fairly impressive flight of blackbirds, cowbirds, and grackles
this evening at Hog Hole (Ithaca, NY). Most flocks were about 300 - 500
birds. The biggest surprise was a single adult male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
in a flock about 400 birds that was comprised of 80% Red-winged Blackbirds
and 18% Common Grackles and a few cowbirds. I first spotted the bold white
patches on the upperwing (primary coverts) and then quickly realized that
entire head was yellow except for a small amount of black around the eye.
The bird appeared intermediate in size and shape between the male
Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles. We didn't hear it call. Jessie
quickly got on the bird and had good scope views as it headed to the West.
I think it will be challenging to refind this bird, but it may be worth
checking flocks of blackbirds in the area a bit more closely than usual.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park

2012-03-10 Thread Llolya
I spotted a Woodcock and a Wilson's Snipe at Croton Point Park this
afternoon! The woodcock was in the wooded marsh at the entrance to the park
and
the snipe was in a water-logged ditch on the top of the landfill. Also on
the landfill were 2 Horned Larks and a Kestrel. Tree Swallow numbers over the
Croton Train Station are increasing to ~40. I also heard a Screech Owl in
the campground. Another Birder also reported hearing a Pine Warbler in the
campground area in the tall pines near the marsh.

I birded Croton Point Park with my friend on the 8'th. We had some great
tastes of early migration. Over the marsh we saw ~25 Tree swallows which was
a bit unexpected. Blackbird numbers were also rising, and we saw hundreds
of Red wing blackbirds, Grackles, and Cowbirds. on the edge of the
landfill we also saw an early (or possibly over wintering) Chipping Sparrow in
spring plumage. other sparrows included 2 Fox Sparrows, Swamp Sparrows, Tree
Sparrows and Song Sparrows, . There were also 9 Green Winged Teal in the mud
in one of the puddles close to the beach. Bluebirds were also still
around. a Bald Eagle flew right over our head above the model airplane runway.
There were also a couple of Killdeer on the landfill. as the sun went down,
we heard an Eastern Screech Owl near the baseball field. Ring Billed Gull
numbers are also high at the train station.
