[nysbirds-l] "1st one out of the box"...a mystery !

2012-04-29 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

This AM ~ 0645, Tom Moran and I headed south & west, with our 1st stop being
RMSPk., where we had a thrush that frustrated us enough to not "call it",
pending someone else's appraisal of 2 photos I managed to get.
We then drove the Ocean Pkwy., picking up an Osprey (returning from the ocean
carrying a fish that seemed to be as long as it was), a male N.Harrier, a
Merlin and 2 Indigo Buntings, before arriving at Gilgo, where we had the
"resident" Blue Grosbeak.
Continuing on to JBWE, the only bird of note was a female N.Harrier.
>From there we went to HLSPk., which we found to be very quiet, although we did
>get a FOY Yellow Warbler.
Next was Alley Pond Pk., also very quiet, but managing to produce our FOY
N.Waterthrush, as well as our 2nd YWAR of the day.
Forest Pk. was our last stop, finding "The Waterhole" still holding a little of
last week's heavy rain, and attracting some FOY birds for us - namely, Gray
Catbird & Baltimore Oriole.
Tom managed to get a "lifer hat-trick" today, consisting of the grosbeak, the
waterthrush and the "mystery bird"...whichever of the 3 possible thrushes it
turns out to be !
Cheers, Bob

[nysbirds-l] Blue Grosbeak (2), Connetquot S.P., Oakdale, Suffolk Co.

2012-04-29 Thread Michael Scheibel
Looked unsuccessfully this evening for the previously reported
Yellow-throated Warbler @ CSP from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. My wife Lynne and I did
relocate the first summer male Blue Grosbeak as reported earlier today by
Ken Thompson in the company of a breeding plumage adult male Blue Grosbeak
in the paddock west of the main building. Also, had a FOS Green Heron fly
over the nearby pond.

[nysbirds-l] Southern Brooklyn weekend

2012-04-29 Thread a...@digitalmediatree.com
At Owl’s Head Park on the Narrows this morning the migrant showing
was scanty, but included an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, adding to this
spring’s unusual number of reports, as well as a group of three male
INDIGO BUNTINGS.

On Saturday 4/28 at Calvert Vaux Park (Coney Island Creek, aka Dreier-
Offerman Park) things were more active, highlighted by a female BLUE
GROSBEAK, which, like the buntings, may be from the fallout
associated with last week’s nor’easter. The park also featured at
least three WILSON’S SNIPE among five shorebird species, and a
singing WHITE-EYED VIREO.

Good birding,

Re:[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler Connetquot State Park, Suffolk County

2012-04-29 Thread John Gluth
I arrived at Connetquot this morning (~8:15) not having heard anything about
the Yellow-throated Warbler since Derek Roger's post Monday, let alone that
it had relocated from the fish hatchery. So I planned to make the 15-20 min.
walk up there and then just concentrate my search in the area it had been
frequenting, hoping to hear its song. Well, I had barely begun my northward
trek up the hatchery road when I heard THAT song coming from trees growing
along the north side of the old horse corral (between main buildings and the
horse barn: 40.751682,-73.151090)! I was stunned by this seemingly amazing
bit of serendipity. I followed the bird over the next few minutes as it
moved east through the trees (mid-upper canopy) between the corral and road.
Then it stopped singing. I waited 10 minutes for it to resume. When it
didn't, I continued up to the hatchery since I still had much of the 2 hours
search time I'd allotted myself.

The walk to the hatchery was pretty quiet, the one notable exception being
3 Ovenbirds, each advertising its territories to its neighbors. The area
around the hatchery was moderately more active. During the 75 minutes I
spent looping around the complex I encountered low single-digit numbers of
Yellow-rumped, and Yellow warblers, 1 B Warbler, 1 Common Yellowthroat,
a few Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 1 Great-crested Flycatcher, 1 E. Phoebe,
and 1 Baltimore Oriole. Chipping Sparrows were abundant. A pair of Fish
Crows were building a nest.

Upon returning to where I'd had the YTWA earlier, I again heard it singing,
and went into pursuit mode. That's when Dave Klauber and I converged on the
bird, both of us getting nice looks at it over ~10 minutes. If you go for
the bird, the best plan of action would probably be to stand in the field
adjacent to the parking lot, close to the White Pines lining the road
(across from the garage, 40.750085,-73.151810), and just listen. The bird
should eventually come within earshot. The bird was seen in oaks, White
Pines and Pitch Pines.

The best of the few mediocre photos I got of the YTWA can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler Connetquot State Park, Suffolk County

2012-04-29 Thread David Klauber

The Yellow-throated warbler previously reported near the hatchery apparently
has not been there the last couple of days, however either it or another one is
near the toll booths. Thanks to Derek Rogers for the heads up. Although not
posted here, a couple of people saw it yesterday just north of the toll booths
in the pines, and apparently in the deciduous trees along the water. This
morning from about 10:30 to 11 John Gluth and I saw it from the pines just west
of the main buildings that are a bit north of the toll booths to nearby
deciduous trees. It ranged from the southern edge of these pines (this is just
north of the paved road on the short stretch where it goes east-west before
curving north towards the hatchery) to the deciduous trees northwest of the
pines, adjacent to an overgrown field. This was just west of the main paved
path that goes to the hatcery. When I left it was working its way south to the
pines again. This area has a sign saying bird breeding area - do not enter

[nysbirds-l] Connetquot Yellow-throated and a Blue Grosbeak

2012-04-29 Thread Ken Thompson
Finally after a couple of instances of bad timing I got to see the YTWA at
Connetqout SPP. Another birder by the name of Manny helped me get on it
right away. Later he spotted the first summer male Blue Grosbeak in the
paddock behind the main building.

During the 75 minutes I
spent looping around the complex I encountered low single-digit numbers of
Yellow-rumped, and Yellow warblers, 1 BW Warbler, 1 Common Yellowthroat,
a few Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 1 Great-crested Flycatcher, 1 E. Phoebe,
and 1 Baltimore Oriole.

Alex Wilson

[nysbirds-l] 1st one out of the box...a mystery !

2012-04-29 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

This AM ~ 0645, Tom Moran and I headed south west, with our 1st stop being
RMSPk., where we had a thrush that frustrated us enough to not call it,
pending someone else's appraisal of 2 photos I managed to get.
We then drove the Ocean Pkwy., picking up an Osprey (returning from the ocean
carrying a fish that seemed to be as long as it was), a male N.Harrier, a
Merlin and 2 Indigo Buntings, before arriving at Gilgo, where we had the
resident Blue Grosbeak.
Forest Pk. was our last stop, finding The Waterhole still holding a little of
last week's heavy rain, and attracting some FOY birds for us - namely, Gray
Catbird Baltimore Oriole.
Tom managed to get a lifer hat-trick today, consisting of the grosbeak, the
waterthrush and the mystery bird...whichever of the 3 possible thrushes it
turns out to be !
Cheers, Bob
