[nysbirds-l] Addition to my earlier post
Granted, driving all those extra miles from Ironwood Rd. to Mine Rd. did not get me a Golden-winged Warbler, but it did provide a wonderful look at an adult N.Goshawk, as it flew across Mine Rd., bathed in the returning sunlight, after a heavy downpour, at ~ 1915 last night ! Re: [nysbirds-l] NYC: Bryant Park, Thu. 7-Jun incl. Wilson's Warbler, AK & PF
Scooped again! I saw the Wilson's this afternoon around 4:30 and was all excited to report this first for the park, but you beat me to it Ben. I will add two species to your list: Ovenbird & Northern Waterthrush, both hanging out under the shrubs on the south side of the lawn, in the same vicinity as the Wilson's. I also saw a male Common Yellowthroat, in addition to the several females present. Bryant Park continues to surprise... [nysbirds-l] Late post re: Sterling Forest State Park - Good news/bad news!
The good news: I was able to parlay a visit to my brother in Scarsdale, with visits to the above on 5/5 and 5/6. I saw both Mississippi Kites on both days, marveled at their acrobatics as they picked off dragon flies (some caught as they dove to just a foot or two above the driveway leading into the visitors center), and then, after they found a suitable "kitchen table", separate the "wheat from the chaff", before "inhaling" the insect ! The highlight however, occurred at ~ 1545 on the 6th, while I was having my own dinner, the pair copulated in a tree along said driveway! The bad news: I missed Golden-winged Warbler both days, at both S/F/S/Pk. and Mine Road, o/o Route 9W. The closest I came to the bird, while walking under the tower line at the end of Ironwood Rd. (in the company of Judy Cinquina and Denise Farrell, N.J. birders with very keen ears) they kept hearing an individual who wouldn't show itself - which I, without keen hearing, couldn't even hear. They were also responsible for finding a pair of Black-Billed Cockoos at the "turn around" at the end of Ironwood Rd., that many of us enjoyed. On 5/5, Bob DeCandido and Debbie Allen were very helpful in my finding quite a few FOY birds, including Yellow-throated Vireo.
