Re: [nysbirds-l] South Fork LI: A little more information on the Montauk Lapwings

2012-11-11 Thread Phil Jeffrey
That bird was in Mercer County NJ.
The confusion probably arises because the nearest town (Allentown) is in
Monmouth.
The bird was not seen since the original sighting and wasn't evident on
checking the most likely areas around Allentown on Saturday morning - but
there's a great deal of habitat in that area.

[nysbirds-l] South Fork LI: Montauk Lapwings REFOUND

2012-11-11 Thread Angus Wilson
Jim Ash, Frank Quevedo and Barb Rubinstein refound the NORTHERN LAPWINGS in
the northern section of Deep Hollow, near some wet spots.

This is private land but can be viewed from the Paumanok/Parkway Trail
(white markings) that follows the ridge top above the Theodore Roosevelt
County Park (entrance on N side of Rt 27) just before the Deep Hollow
'Dude' Ranch. Park at the park buildings and then walk up to the gate (be
sure to shut it if shut already) then follow the fence along the ridge and
down into the depression. Thanks to Peter Polshek for relaying the news.

Additionally, there was an unconfirmed report of a Brewers Blackbird near
Rita's Horse Stables (West Lake Drive and Montauk Hwy) by birders searching
for a Myiarchus flycatcher seen by Jorn Ake yesterday. No resightings of
the flycatcher so far.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island: Rarity updates

2012-11-11 Thread Angus Wilson
[11 AM Sunday 11 Nov]

Apparently the VIRGINIA'S WARBLER was seen by John Askildsen, Tom Burke,
Gail Benson (and others?) about 1.5 hrs ago in Alley Pond Park at the spot
where "it was seen yesterday".

The NORTHERN LAPWINGS are being watched in Deep Hollow (northern section)
by John Shemilt right now. Seth Ausubel reports an interesting 'dusky'
Canada-type goose on the pasture on the south side of the Hwy. I have no
other details.

No new word on the possible Brewer's Blackbird or the myiarchus flycatcher
from the Rita's Horse stable area.

A northern shrike sitting in the largest dead tree in the fields adjacent

[nysbirds-l] Odds and Ends from Montauk today ...

2012-11-11 Thread Anthony Collerton
I'm sure many people will post today as there were many birders out looking
for the NORTHERN LAPWINGS. The Lapwings performed well and many got to see
them with an added bonus of a BREWER'S BLACKBIRD found by Michael McBrien
this morning. The Deep Hollow area also had a Cackling Goose, a
(potential) 'Dusky' Goose and many American Pipits. Earlier in the morning
Peter Polshek and I also had a Northern Rough-winged Swallow at the pond
there (good close views thwarted our attempts to turn it into something
rarer and more seasonally appropriate) and a Red Crossbill with calls that
seem to be 'Type 1' and not the 'Type 3s' that have been seen in New York
of late. I also saw 6 Evening Grosbeaks on nearby East Lake Drive and
heard many reports of White-winged Crossbills. Unfortunately, despite some
effort, we were not able to refind yesterdays Myiarchus flycatcher. A
great day of birding Out East.

[nysbirds-l] Selasphorus Hummingbird in Manhattan

2012-11-11 Thread Sam Stuart
All,
This afternoon there was a Selasphorus hummingbird in the Heather Gardens at
Fort Tryon, Washington Heights. It wasn't flying much, mostly stayed perched
high up in a tree. Based on what I could see of the bird, I'd guess it's an
immature male. Judging from the amount of green on the back, i'd bet on it
being a Rufous. Here's a couple of pictures:

[nysbirds-l] South Fork, LI Rarities - Northern Lapwings, Brewer's Blackbird, etc.

2012-11-11 Thread Michael McBrien
Today, the South Fork of Long Island (Suffolk Co.) held many
interesting birds.

The Northern Lapwings were present around Deep Hollow throughout the
day. Several times they were flushed and could either be found in the
north or south pasture.

Earlier, while searching for the lapwings (before they were refound by
Jim Ash and party), I came across a dark-eyed blackbird foraging
around the pond at Rita's Stables. Initial views were obscured but
eventually, it came into the open, confirming my thoughts that this
may be a Brewer's.

Overall, this female bird superficially resembles a cowbird at first
glance (rather than a Rusty), but upon closer inspection, many details
are quite unique from either of these species. The straight culmen,
dark iris, dull brown plumage without any distinct streaking, as well
as different structural and behavioral characteristics all point
toward Brewers and away from these other candidates.

Shortly after these views, it flew off to the east. When I lost it in
the air, we originally thought it had continued on to another area
(possibly Deep Hollow); we were unable to relocate it at other
locations, so it is possible that it had recircled back to an obscured
area of the Stables. Jim Ash did relocate it at the pond at Rita's
around 11, allowing most birders in the area to see it. For those
hoping to try for the blackbird in the coming days, please drive down
to the barn at Rita's Stables (off West Lake Dr) and view from there.
Rita is quite accommodating to birders, but requests that people do
not watch from the shrubbery off of Montauk Highway as this may
frighten the horses.

Photos of the blackbird as well as other highlights from around
Montauk can be seen at the end of this album: https://picasaweb.google.com/117391989476777248424/NewYorkBirds2012

A Cackling Goose was present in the south pasture of Deep Hollow this
morning. While viewing this bird, Seth picked out a very dark-
breasted Canada which looked great for being a "Dusky" Canada (B.c.
occindentalis).

Additionally, on a belated note, yesterday afternoon, I found my FOS
Cackling Goose in a flock of Canadas on Roanoke Avenue in Northville.
Pipits were quite evident in most open fields on the North Fork
yesterday and I tallied 381 between Eastport and Northville. Large
numbers were also noted on the South Fork today.

Good November birding to all,
   Michael McBrien
   East Patchogue
