[nysbirds-l] Montauk Point and route

2013-03-16 Thread Peter Priolo
A couple highlights today:

At the Montauk harbor inlet there were 2 Brant and one first year Iceland
Gull.

At Flying Point in Southampton there were 3 Piping Plovers and an Osprey
near 27.

A Lesser Blacked-backed Gull, Dunlin, Black Bellied Plovers and
Red-breasted Nuthatches at Lazy Point.

At Montuak Point there were large rafts of all three Scoters,
Common Eiders, Horned Grebes, many Red-breasted Mergs, Oldsquaw,
and many Red-throated and Common Loons of which some whose heads were
almost all dark black.
No Alcids.
A Sharp-shinned Hawk in the pines at the IGA would not budge despite
walker-bys and drive-bys.

On 27 near the SE corner of Montauk Lake, a flock of larger white Tern-like
birds flew by while we were driving, but we could not relocate them. The
only characteristic I am sure of, besides being "tern-like" in the wings
and posture, is a square white tail. Maybe a smaller gull species like
Bonaparte's. There were a good dozen of them.

[nysbirds-l] 3/16 Prospect Park , Greenwood Cemetry ( Kings County)

2013-03-16 Thread prosbird
A follow up on today's birds, particularly the VARIED THRUSH.

The Ambergill Pool, in Prospect Park's wooded Ravine section, continues to be
the most reliable spot for this extralimital thrush despite seen early morning
on the original spot Nethermead Bridge back slope ( 930 am). A group of
birders at Ambergill Pool were already looking when I arrived, the bird seen
resting on a fallen log by the back shore. It appears it loylly prefers this
location after noontime into the afternoon. Patience is a virtue. See Keir
Randalls description 325 pm sighting to Ebirds

> Varied Thrush 1 Continues in the Ambergill, in the leaf litter on south side
> of stream, 50ft or so back. Watched from around 3.25 to 4pm and was still
> there when I left (no other birders!) Very active, picking through leaves
> with bill and also kicking up debris with feet. Occasionally "froze" on
> ground as if waiting out danger. Every 10 minutes or so it would fly up to a
> perch a few feet off the ground before returning to forage.

> alt="Varied Thrush, Prospect Park 3.16.13" />

For access to this location for those of you unfamiliar with Prospect Park,
from the Picnic House, go due east for the woods to an intersection of 4
roads. Look for a tall black chain link, go thru that entrance with the wood
bridge on your right, hence follow the creek to a pool 100 feet down which is
the Ambergill Pool . On the far shore where all the brush and fallen timbers
are is where the Varied Thrush hangs out. A number of sightings were posted in
the afternoon, especially from 3 pm towards dusk.

Other news for Prospect were 10 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS some seen on the ground
on Lookout Hill's Butterfly Meadow ( the lower of two on the summit); 2 hen
COMMON MERGANSERS on Prospect Lake with rare HORNED GREBE, 2 RING-NECKED DUCKS,
12 PINE SISKINS at the feeders.

Over at Greenwood Cemetery , on the "Hill of the Graves" or near Linden and
Grove Avenues, best accessed from the weekend only 9th Ave ( or Prospect Park
West Ave ) entrance ( get a free map at the sentry booth) was EASTERN
MEADOWLARK. WE saw it well perched atop a cedar tree.

More details and lists will be posted on my blog shortly

[nysbirds-l] Hawks in Harriman

2013-03-16 Thread Andreas Kanon
Had two mating Red-shouldered Hawks in the marsh behind the house today.
Also a Sharp-shinned Hawk decide to swing by as the snow was coming down
hard.

Red-wing Blackbird count is increasing and the Grackles are starting to
show up as well.

Managed to take a few photos, here is one:

[nysbirds-l] Banded Ipswich Jones Beach

2013-03-16 Thread David La Magna
I am not sure how significant this is but while waiting for the Lapland
Longspur to show up at the Coast Guard Station I took a picture of a
Savannah "Ipswich" Sparrow. It was not until later that I realized it has
a metal band in its leg. If any researcher could use this information
please e-mail me off list.

The Lapland Longspur did show up with Horned Larks, and there were at least
two of the immature White-crowned Sparrows mentioned yesterday by the
entrance.

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn: Atlantic Avenue Peregrine

2013-03-16 Thread Matthew Wills
Peregrine falcon jetting down Atlantic Avenue to perch on Brooklyn Detention
Complex at Smith St. Vocalized a bit as I passed below -- I bet that sounds
weird from inside a cell. I understand from previous posts that the falcons
nested on this building last year.

Keep your eyes on the skies,
