Re: [nysbirds-l] Pine siskin

2013-04-27 Thread Danny
Hi,

Here in East Chatham, we've had one pine Siskin for 2 days,4/26 and
4/27,feeding with purple finches and juncos beneath a black oil sunflower
feeder. Rose breasted grosbeak males showed up 4/26.
An interesting overlap.

[nysbirds-l] The New York Botanical Garden

2013-04-27 Thread Debbie Becker
Our resident great horned owl had two owlets this year and was faced raising
them as a single mother. Her mate, Junior, and Rose, the Red tailed hawk, both
went missing at the same time a few months ago. Perhaps they had a final deadly
altercation after numerous confrontations. No one knows for sure. It was odd
that they both vanished in early winter. But, I am happy to say, the owlets
have fledged and were observed on today's walk.

In addition, we have a wood duck who has nested in a tree above the water.
Quite a sight seeing wood ducks in a tree hole. A regular nesting site for them
- but may be a first - at the Garden.

There were 58 birders on my walk today and although we had a large crowd we all
were treated to great sightings of:

PRAIRIE WARBLER-1
Black & White-2
Pine-10
Palm-3
Yellow rumped-many
Blue headed vireo-1
Ruby crowned kinglet-2
White breasted nuthatch-2
Chickadee-1
Belted kingfisher-1
Northern flicker-5
Red bellied woodpecker-3
Downy woodpecker-1
Northern cardinal-4
Blue jay-3
Mockingbird-1
PURPLE FINCH-1
American goldfinch-3
House finch-1
MERLIN-1
Red tailed hawk-2
White throated sparrow-3
Chipping sparrow-3
Swamp sparrow-1
Song sparrow-2
Brown headed cowbird-2
Mallard-3
Canada goose-4
Wood duck-7
Mourning Dove-1

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe pics

2013-04-27 Thread Corey Finger
A few more shots of the Say's Phoebe in Prospect Park are below. It was an
incredibly easy twitch - even a three-year-old could do it! (And did, as my
son, Desi, followed up last weekend's Ruff with the phoebe this weekend.)

http://1birds.com/says-phoebe-in-prospect-park-brooklyn-new-york.htm

Other than the phoebe the only highlights we had earlier in the day at Oakland
Lake and APEC in Queens were Warbling Vireos and Yellow Warblers at both
locations, and single nice male Common Yellowthroat at Oakland Lake (behind the
backstop on the baseball field across from the east end of the lake).

Good Birding,

Location question. The location was described as the north end of the meadow
leading to the peninsula. The map referenced by Arie Gilbert shows a point on
the other side of the lake, southwest of the skating rink, quite far away from
the peninsula.
Which is correct?

see it (just hover over the map). Seen just off of Wellhouse Dr at the edge
of the Peninsula.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Inwood Hill Park Yellow-throated Warbler

The Yellow-throated Warbler is still here in Inwood foraging just uphill from
where Nadir described. Seems to be making a 20-30min loop of the hillside. So
hangout and watch the trees to see him as he's no longer singing.

Thanks,
Sam Stuart

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach - Red-headed Woodpecker & Gull-billed Terns

2013-04-27 Thread David Klauber
I found the Red-headed Woodpecker in the grass along the northern end of Bay
parkway, about 1/3 of the way between the Field 10 fishing piers and the
Meadowbrook turnoff at about 7:45. It flew slightly east along the median, and
others saw it in the median actively feeding / flying shortly afterwards. The 2
Gull-billed Terns were not present at the Coast Guard Station around 8, but by
9:30 they were roosting on the sandbar at high tide. Hempstead Lake State Park
was very quiet with a few migrants - N Waterthrush, Parula, Palm, B&W warblers,
Blue-headed Vireo, but no sign of the Yellow-throated Warbler

[nysbirds-l] Inwood Hill Park Yellow-throated Warbler

I just found and am currently listening to a Yellow-throated Warbler in Inwood

Walk to the south east corner of the soccer field to enter the woods. Take the
path to your right, or the north paved path that overlooks the field and the
lagoon. Do not take the path that takes you into the Clove and Bird Alley. Walk
up the paved path about 150 paces or until you can look down on a triangular
patch of tangle where the hill, the Lagoon, and the edge of the soccer field
meet. Start looking and listening both up and down slope from there. I first
had coming up from the water and watched it slowly work it's way up the hill,
moving north and west. Un believably, I obtained digi- binned image with my
phone as I was scrambling up the fairly steep hill face while it flitted and
creeped from trunk to low hanging branch. I will forward a link to my pic later.
Directions: Inwood Hill Park is the Northern most park on Manhattan Island,
NYC. You may enter the park at 211th St. or 218th St. walking west from
Broadway. Take the 1 to 215th or the A to the last uptown stop, 207th.

Good Luck,

[nysbirds-l] nesting Merlins

2013-04-27 Thread Mickey Scilingo
After following the noise of the constantly calling MERLINS, I was easily able
to find their nest at the top of a White Pine across the street in the
neighbors yard. Welcome to the neighborhood!! Looks like it may be a long
summer for my feeder birds. Just remember guys..the black birds with the
brown heads are VERY delicious!!

On the north side of my yard, I witnessed a pair of OSPREY battle for a perch
atop a dead snag, at one point locking talons and swinging wildly about
together before breaking off. Not sure if this is part of their mating ritual,
but I did not see any copulation between these 2 birds.

On another note, it seems early to me, but I heard my first YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO of the season singing this morning while watching the Osprey.

[nysbirds-l] mating Merlins

2013-04-27 Thread Mickey Scilingo
I just watched a pair of MERLINS copulate in a tree across the street from my
house. Twice. The female is still there at this moment, while the male flew
off after the second copulation. There are plenty of large White Pines in my
yard and in the patch of woods across the street, so I am hoping that they
settle in to nest in this area. This would be a great neighborhood to raise a
family.
