[nysbirds-l] Mississippi Kite/Staten Island YES

2013-06-15 Thread Shane Blodgett
The long staying Mississippi Kite is showing well at the Cemetery of the
Resurrection, soaring fairly high above the road leading to the overlook and
feeding on the wing (cicadas of course).

Seen with the original finder Anthony C. and Mike Vedder of Long Island.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa preserve Nassau County Black-Billed Cuckoo

2013-06-15 Thread David Klauber
This morning I saw a Black-billed Cuckoo in Massapequa Preserve, about 1/4 mile
north of Pittsburg Ave on the dirt path running n-s on the west side of the
preserve. It caught and ate 1 or 2 caterpillars, so did not appear to be
carrying food, which would indicate breeding. Besides the usual breeders the
only thing of note was an immature Cooper's hawk being chased by Jays and a
Kingbird. The pond where John Turner found Least Bitterns 2 years ago is
occupied by a family of swans

[nysbirds-l] Arctic Tern & Black Tern @ Westhampton Dunes Overlook (Suffolk)

2013-06-15 Thread Derek Rogers
I heard there was a decent showing of Arctic Terns at Cupsogue this AM.

For those who may have missed them, there was an adult Arctic Tern, along with
a sub adult Black Tern, perhaps the same bird that was at Cupsogue earlier.

The Arctic lingered on the small remaining exposed flat when I left around
11:00 AM.

Best,

[nysbirds-l] Nickerson Beach

2013-06-15 Thread syschiff
Nickerson Beach 15 June

Arrived at 7:20 this morning. A half dozen photographers had proceeded me.
Other than AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS with young and hundreds of COMMON TERNS,
they had almost nothing else to take pictures of. A pair of GULL-BILLED TERNS
was flying over the tern/skimmer colony and a pair of ROSEATE TERNS was sighted
before I came.

A lone SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was feeding along the shore edge plus about 20
SANDERLING. A molting FORSTER'S TERN was momentarily among the resting terns,
picked up by Brendan Fogarty as it landed just as he stopped to chat. LEAST
TERNS are beginning to nest farther to the west. Both the Piping Plover and
Tern/Skimmer colony was being monitored and counted today.

There are still approx. 125 BLACK SCOTERS in the water off the beach, but the
Surf Scoters and the single Common Eider were not present today. NO Arctic or
Black Terns reported as of 10:30.

[nysbirds-l] Arctic, Black and Roseate Terns @ Cupsogue LI...

2013-06-15 Thread Andrew Baksh
A tern fest at Cupsogue this morning, highlighted by at least 7 ARCTIC
TERNS in a variety of plumages. Adult and 1st and 2 summer types were
all seen and documented with Tom Burke, Gail Benson, Doug Futuyma,
Richard Kaskan and another birder whose name I did not get (sorry).

Additionally, 2 ROSEATE, 2 FORSTER'S and 1 immature BLACK TERN was also present.

Earlier a sea watch netted a decent number of WILSON STORM PETRELS
and a few CORY SHEARWATERS.

Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device!

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown - 6/15

2013-06-15 Thread Austin Mohr
Hello all,

I birded Doodletown this AM from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM with some friends from
Queens.  We found most of the key breeding species including a Black-billed
Cuckoo, numerous Hooded Warblers, Cerulean Warblers (five singing males), one
Kentucky Warbler, and at least one Worm-eating Warbler.
I was disappointed and mildly alarmed by the lack of some typical breeding
birds (no Chestnut-sided Warbler, for example).  This seems to be the case at
many locations this year.

We also found a large Timber Rattlesnake just off the trail.  It made its
presence known when we evidently got too close (unknowingly) and it unleashed
the famous rattle. We quickly stepped back to a safe distance to observe for a
couple minutes, then moved on.  I think it is clearly a good idea to remind
everyone to be cautious where you step.

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eagles Nesting - Shirley, NY

2013-06-15 Thread Matthew Clements
Our local newsletter/paper has indicated that Bald Eagles are nesting on the
Carmen's River in Shirley, NY. Has anyone seen this? If so, please give
location. There are a lot of Osprey stands in this area as seen in Wertheim on
the old trail - from a distance they can appear

Thank you for any input.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Bald Eagles Nesting - Shirley, NY

2013-06-15 Thread Luke Ormand
Matthew,

The birds have attempted to nest - though I don't know of they have been
successful this year as they are new to the area and likely a "young couple".
The pair hung around last year too but didn't produce any offspring.

They are nesting on a creek off the Carmans River - however the USFWS has
blocked the creek off so kayakers/canoers cannot access the area. Newsday
reports that the access will be unrestricted starting next week (Monday?)

Apparently you can walk the black tupelo trail at wetheim wildlife refuge and
at the end of it the eagles can be seen with a scope or bins across the creek.
I know people who have seen the eagles flying in the area or perched near the
mouth of the river.

I intend on making a trip via kayak soon in hopes of photographing them. For
those interested in seeing them from the hiking trail - keep in mind that
wetheim has very restrictive hours. I believe they close at 4:00 PM sharp
everyday.
