[nysbirds-l] Likely resighting of the Elegant Tern
Brett Gleitsmann sent photos to the NYSARC email address showing what appears to be the Elegant Tern. I shared the images with Andy Guthrie and Andrew Baksh who agree it's likely the same bird. If I understand Brett's message correctly it was photographed on some sand flats just west of the Ponquogue Bridge shortly before 8 PM this evening. This is 12 miles east of Cupsogue County Park. Given the extensive coverage at Cupsogue and likely two sightings in the space of a week (Arie Gilbert on 27 Jun and the Guthrie/Baksh et al on 3 July), it makes sense the bird is ranging a fair bit. Thus it's probably a good idea if people search widely in the coming days and try to stay in cell phone contact with other searchers in case one party refinds it. With a few more sightings a more predictable pattern might emerge. Those who've seen and photographed Royal Terns in the area over the past few weeks should check their images. [nysbirds-l] Cupsogue 7/4
Red-necked Stint and 2-3 Arctic Terns present on the flats in the early afternoon (sorry, didnt have phone or watch on me). Lots of birders. A few let me see through their scopes. Many thanks. Also at least 5 Black Terns, 3 Royal Terns and numbers of Roseates. The Roseates, and only them, were all flying very erratically. The wind wasnt terrible and all the other terns seemed fine. Someone said maybe they were catching insects. Everyone was still waiting for the Elegant to show when I left after not much time. [nysbirds-l] Not a Lot of Lot: Taking Cupsogue Access Denial w/a Grain of [Lot's Wife]
Mike Feder and I went to Cupsogue today, hot spot that it has been. But by mid-morning the lot was full and all comers were turned away for the foreseeable future (we circled repeatedly before giving up). So forget the tide charts, worse and more sociologically based barriers remain. Anyway, let this be a warning to the unwary.
