[nysbirds-l] Possible California Gull-Farm Field-e/s Locust Ave, s/e/c/o Main Rd.-Mattituck/Cutchouge

2013-07-10 Thread robert adamo
Earlier today, North Fork birder Jody Levin, while chauffeuring her 105
"years young" father on business, sighted a gull, in a newly plowed farm
field, that looked "different". The bird was in a flock of mostly
Ring-billed Gulls, with a few Herring Gulls amongst them.

Armed with only binoculars and having to leave, she called Aaron Virgin of
"The Group for the East End", who saw the bird ~2:45 PM, and posted it
on NFBirds, in the hope of others seeing the bird and offering
comments...as he had to leave also. Aaron's initial impression was
possible California Gull, listing size (smaller than a Herring Gull), long
wings, dark mantle, dark iris, bill markings and leg color (whitish pink,
and at times, appearing to be greenish yellow).

I arrived ~ 5 PM, finding what could have been the same flock of gulls
(mostly ring-bills, ~30) and 4- 5 herrings, along with, what I believe to
be the same gull that Aaron described. Although I was only on the bird for
~ 5 minutes, I am sure of the following:

1) dark gray mantle and scapulars (quite a bit darker than nearby
ring-bills)
2) Coverts molting
3) Larger size than ring-bills, but closer to them than to herrings.
4) Long wings, with dark primary tips.
5) Rounded head
6) Dark eye
7) Greenish legs
8) Bill - Red gonydeal spot and black bill ring.
9) The bird's standing posture seemed more horizontal than the nearby
ring-bills, which to me, looked more pitched upwards, as you traveled from
tail to head.

I referenced *Gulls of the Americas* by Steve N.G.Howell and Jon
Dunn, finding photo #24.22 on Pg.154, of a 2nd cycle breeding California
Gull, to be the closest to what I saw in the field today.

Jody, Aaron and* *I will be trying to relocate the gull tomorrow, and
welcome all others to help solve this mystery !

Cheers,
Bob

A quick clarification thanks to a helpful response, because I failed to
introduce COTE as the 4-letter code for Common Tern. There are hundreds of
Common Tern that nest in the main skimmer colony. The Sandwich Tern was with

Hi all,

After appearing at 12:10, the Sandwich Tern was seen in the area for the next
50 minutes or so. It was last seen by myself and Pat Palladino flying out of a
large flock of COTE over the water, although it had done this earlier and
returned. A survey of the area with Menachem Goldstein and his mother (great
meeting you guys!) around 5:00 showed no Sandwich Tern, although a Roseate Tern
with a red bill base sitting with the same group of terns was nice. Menachem
had mentioned getting brief looks at a large tern at Jones Beach just a little
earlier. I hadn't heard of any recent Royal Tern sightings in the area, so it
may well have been the Sandwich. Another check of the skimmer colony around
6:00 PM revealed no unusual birds.

3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (all starting their 2nd cycle) were on the beach
amongst the regulars. Also there was a gull that seemed to be a tiny Great
Black-backed. Photos of this bird and some other gulls from the flock can be
seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Results of the Viking Fleet/CRESLI whale watch 07/07/13 - large number of plegic birds

2013-07-10 Thread Arthur H. Kopelman, Ph.D.
Sunday July 7, 2013

It's an ALL-STAR season opener!

A spectacular line-up: whales, dolphins, turtles and pelagic birds. Our day
started off with a spectacular view of nearly 1000 common dolphins. The
large super- aggregation was spotted at 11am. We stayed with them for quite
some time, then headed on. We next encountered loggerhead turtles (2) and
eventually turned back from 24 miles out. We found 2 large fin whales
feeding fast south of where the dolphins had been. We were able to get great
views of the two and saw another about 1/2 mile away. What a great way to
start!

Totals:

1000 Common Dolphins

3 Fin Whales

2 Loggerhead Turtles

500+ Great Shearwaters

85 Sooty Shearwaters

30 Cory's Shearwaters

2 Pomarine Jaegers

1 Unidentified Jaeger

1 Manx Shearwater

2 Wilson's Storm Petrels -

[nysbirds-l] Elegant Tern- no, "Lifer" - yes

2013-07-10 Thread robert adamo
Sorry for the late post - I'm hoping that someone, not seeing this negative
post yesterday, decided to give it a shot, and got the bird today !

Yesterday,as planned, I met with Rich Guthrie & Jon Askildsen at Cupsogue
Co. Pk. at 0800, to try for the Elegant Tern. Having arrived earlier, they
had made contact with Dave Klauber & Bobby Rossetti, who were on the flats
already. A plan was soon formed, which had Dave & Bobby remaining in place,
while the 3 of us headed for Tiana Beach... and points east. We checked
every good spot (we could access) from the sand bar in Shinnicock Bay (n/o
the inlet) back to Tiana, where we found 4.5 new birders...but no new birds
! During the eastward leg of our survey, there had been less birds and zero
birders at this location.

The .5 birder was a .5 part of my racking up another "Lifer" ! Her name is
Katie, she is 8 months old, and is the grand-daughter of Eileen & Hans
Schwinn. In addition to Eileen & Katie, the other birders included Sam
Janazzo, Pat Jones and Jim Ash. I had not seen Jim in a few years, prior to
2 days previous at the same location...such is the draw of a special bird,
or two ! Speaking of things "special", it was a pleasure to have Paul
Buckley join our group.

The "Lifer", of course, was having a grandmother, babysitting such a young
"charge", on an active birding hunt ! While writing this last
sentence, another thought emerged...maybe I could lay claim to a 2nd
"Lifer" - that being for helping Eileen carry Katie and/in her
stroller across some deep, sandy terrain, between the parking lot and
boardwalk, and while carrying E's scope, as well !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Belated NYC Bald Eagle & Common Loon

2013-07-10 Thread gabriel willow
Hello All,

My apologies for this much-belated report, the birds could be gone or could
still be present, but seem worth mentioning nonetheless.

On my Jamaica Bay Eco-Cruise for NYC Audubon on Sunday, June 30th, we spotted
an adult Bald Eagle flying over the water near Rockaway Community Park.  I
don't hear about too many adult summertime Bald Eagles in NYC, has anyone else
spotted any?

On a similar note, we passed a basic-plumage type Common Loon swimming in the
bay; this is another species I don't recall seeing here in the summer.  I
assume it was a first-year bird since it was in basic-type plumage, but I
didn't get a close enough look to see if it was browner like a young bird.

Other highlights were: Peregrine Falcon; Black Skimmer, Common, Forster's, and
Least Tern feeding together in the bay; and numerous American Oystercatchers
all around the shallows.

Cheers,

Gabriel Willow

Hi All,

Brendan Fogarty reports a SANDWICH TERN in front of the skimmer colony at

stick, but as of a minute ago is still on the beach and is obviously in the
area.

Good birding,

RE: [nysbirds-l] Tiana Bayside, Early Evening - No Elegant Tern

2013-07-10 Thread Pat Palladino
In furtherance of Eileen and Bob's notice of a possible Red-necked Stint at
Tiana, on Saturday evening, after an unsuccessful attempt at the Elegant Tern,
I left Tiana and headed to Triton Lane to check out the birds there. I decided
to stop back at Tiana on my way home and among the shorebirds, was what I
believed to be a Red-necked Stint. I had previously viewed the bird at
Cupsogue, and was pretty sure it was the Stint, however, it was about
8:30/8:45ish p.m. and it was just too dark to confirm. If it was the same bird,
then it was at Tiana on at least Saturday and Tuesday evenings. I left Tiana on
Sunday at around 5:30 p.m. for Cupsogue to get the Elegant Tern, but did not
see the Stint that early evening at Tiana. For those of you who may try for the
Stint at Tiana this evening, as a bonus, other birders have reported hearing
the calls of Northern Bobwhite in the brush surrounding the parking lot,
although, I have not been lucky enough to hear them.
