[nysbirds-l] Buff-breasted Sandpiper - yes, but not on my first shot !

2013-09-05 Thread robert adamo
Responding to Dan Heglund's report of a "buffy" at the Shoreham sod field
between Route 25A and Cooper St., I was there within an hour but the bird,
as well as the Black-bellied Plover, weren't ! Shorebirds that were,
included 3-4 Pectorals, a few Semipalmated Sandpipers, a few Semipalmated
Plovers, many Killdeers, and 3 Turkey Vultures. Dan returned while I was
still there, but without his earlier "karma" ! He had to leave, and
afterward, as I was leaving, John Gluth pulled up, received a briefing, and
took up the vigil.

Heading toward home, I stopped at the Osborne/Sound Aves, Riv. sod field,
finding 48 Golden Plovers, a few Least Sandpipers, a good number of
Killdeers, plus 2 circling T.V's

Good fortune reared it's welcomed head, as I decided to go straight instead
of turning right at the intersection of Sound & Roanoke Aves (the way
home) so I could "give it the old college try", at the sod field on the s/s
of Sound Ave, next to the Roanoke Vineyards. Finding Gary Straus there, he
proceeded to show me the Buff-breasted Sandpiper he was looking at ! Other
species seen were 1 Pectoral, numerous Killdeers, a few Semipalmated
Plovers, and a huge number of grounded Tree Swallows.

After dinner (and Jeopardy) I tried my hand at "nighthawking". Heading up
to Fresh Pond Rd., Calverton (Jim Clinton Sr's. favorite spot, when he was
doing his nighthawk surveys) I didn't see or hear any...but I really
couldn't complain - hearing all the other night-sounds and thinking of
Jim, and some of the things we did together, was enough for me !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Shorebird report from Jamaica Bay East Pond...

2013-09-05 Thread Andrew Baksh
Not a lot of shorebirds on the pond today as I would have expected given
some of the migration movement. However, a careful search on what was there
turned up some variety.

Highlights were* *a juvenile* WESTERN SANDPIPER*; although, not as gray as
those fresh looking ones that we sometimes get. Several *WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS*, including one that looked like some molting had already begun??

Thanks to a tip from photographer, Johann Schumacher, I added 2 *SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS* at Big John's Pond. The water is extremely low there and has
attracted more shorebirds than I could remember seeing there in the past.
Johann also reported having about 9 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers in the area.

Also a note from Rich Kelly, who I met at Jamaica Bay. He reported having a
decent moment of Cedar Waxwings and Eastern Kingbirds along the beach at
Fort Tilden. So, it looks like some passerine migration continued today.

Some photos of today's birds are
posted
.

[nysbirds-l] Shoreham, Riverhead and Eastport sod fields

2013-09-05 Thread John Gluth
After dipping on the Buff-breasted Sandpiper (did see 2 Pecs) at the Shoreham
sod field (Cooper St. and Randall Rd.), I headed east to Riverhead to check the
Osborne Ave. field. Spent ~1 hour scoping and counting and came up with a total
of 100-105 American Golden Plovers. The birds were widely scattered across the
field for most of my time there, but shortly before my departure they coalesced
along the north edge of the field near Sound Ave., which made counting them
easier.
The only other grasspipers were several Least Sandpipers and the ubiquitous
Killdeer (25-30).

Less than 15 minutes later, I saw a flock of 24 Goldens circle about and
eventually land in the field west of Route 105 and due north of the fire
department training facility on Northville Turnpike. This flock came in from
the west and may have come
from the Osborne Ave. field. Also present were several more Least Sandpipers
and Killdeer. All these birds were distant, a few hundred yards away.

Lastly I checked the sod field between Eastport Manor and Head of the Neck
roads. There, a lone Pectoral Sandpiper was present among ~15 Killdeer.

Re: [nysbirds-l] European Golden Plover in NJ (Brig)

2013-09-05 Thread Andrew Baksh
Glad that Sean Sime, took the initiative in cross posting. For those
wondering on the ID confirmation. I picked up an e-mail from the finder
Harvey Tomlinson who confirmed that the ID was *verified* as a European
Golden Plover (see e-mail below). Hope it is re-found or it makes its way
to NY and is found :) Good luck to anyone twitching this bird.

Hi Jersey Birds,
I have just received confirmation from the Cornell eBird team that the
Plover in question is a European Golden Plover.
This also needs to be confirmed by the New Jersey Records Committee, but
more sightings would surely help!
