[nysbirds-l] NYC Audubon Van Cortlandt Park,

2013-11-09 Thread Nadir Souirgi
I arrived on the parade ground at approximately at 7:10 this morning to
scout for my NYC Audubon Van Cortlandt Park bird walk. Shortly after my
arrival I spotted the Lesser Canada Goose that first appeared in Inwood
Hill Park. Next, I was able to locate the continuing Cackling Goose first
found by Debbie Becker and later reported by Andrew Baksch. I last saw it
flying east in a small, breakaway flock of local geese at approximately
11:15 a.m.. Hopefully, it did not fly away too far and will stick around
long enough for others to enjoy it.
To add to Andrew's earlier post, other notable sightings enjoyed by this
morning's group included a flyover flock of 20 - 30 Pine Siskins, flyover
Eastern Bluebird, Rusty Blackbird, and a presumed Branta/Anser hybrid.
Below is my complete e-bird checklist from today's walk.

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15625941

Happy birding.

[nysbirds-l] Jamaia Bay Wild Life Preserve

2013-11-09 Thread AndyatWH

The West Pond birding was a disaster today compared to what it was for
many years! There were no birds at all in the west pond except one lonely
Great Egret! Not even ruddy ducks, blacks, mallards, swans or brant! ( There
were about 30 Brant however in marshes in the bay).

Since Sandy washed through, filling the west bay with salt water, nothing
has been done to repair the breech and the pathway going around the pond,
so it can go back to be a fresh water pond, and so we can again walk
around the pond and see the nature and birds.

How long are they going to wait? I hope soon, so it can fill up with fresh
water over the winter!

The East Pond, which still has fresh water, still has also birds. Besides
many Ruddy Ducks, Canada goose, several swans, and a few black ducks and
mallards, we saw about four green winged teals, several pied-billed grebes,
two greater yellow legs, and then 27 Snow Goose flew in with one Blue
Goose (dark morf) while we watched from the east end of Big John's path.
There
was nothing much more at the south end of the East Pond, and I never got
to the North end as it was getting dark. The Barn Owl is still in the owl
box at Big John's pond.

Does any one know anyone who is responsible for fixing the breech? It is
not a big project and It is a shame to leave it like it is. I heard an
excuse that the authorities do not want to fix it for fear that it will breech
again!! But so may the rest of Long Island, (my home was flooded too),but we
are all still fixing our flooded homes on the south shore because we live
here!

[nysbirds-l] Work made easier...by a bit of birding !

2013-11-09 Thread robert adamo
Today, between 1000 and 1445, I was one of the volunteers at the combined
ELIAS/ QWR Fall Seed Sale, held at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge in Quogue.
While helping customers get their purchases (seed, bird feeders, etc.) out
to their cars, I was rewarded with a very close, and unobstructed view of
my FOS Winter Wren, a Sharp-shinned Hawk flying low over the
parking-lot, creating much mayhem among the avian population, and a female
Golden-crowned Kinglet, remaining in a small, bare tree (only ~ 3' from the
front door) long enough for most of the folks inside, to get outside and
see this cute creature...some for the first time !

I finished the day out with a fast tour of Dune Rd, during which I had 2
N.Harriers
and a flyover, FOS Great Cormorant.

Cheers,
Bob

These pics are from friday. The most surprising thing I saw was a Northern

from any shore. It was heading into a strong NW wind. What a bird.

[nysbirds-l] Smith Point (Suffolk Co) Short-eared Owl

2013-11-09 Thread Richard Kaskan
At about 5:55 this morning I saw a single Short-eared Owl West of the Fire
Island National Seashore visitor center next to Smith Point county park. I
watched it for perhaps a minute before it dropped out of sight - I hung
around until I thought it was getting too light, but never picked it up
again. Other birds interesting to me there were a Fox Sparrow, 19 American
Pipits, and a Merlin. There was a real Northern Gannet show in the

binoculars up, but there were more.

Dave Klauber just called to report that he and Bobby Rosetti just found a
Western Kingbird along the upper lot at Captree State Park.

Good luck if you try for it.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa ducks and Monk Parakeet

2013-11-09 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi everyone,

I was at the lake by Merrick Road earlier - the winter ducks are moving in
more: saw ~30 ruddy ducks, 5 hooded mergansers, and around a dozen
shovelers and black ducks. Also saw a monk parakeet on Broadway by N Kings
Ave (you'll see the nest) I will post pics of the ducks ASAP on my blog
longislandbirding.blogspot.com.

Good birding,
Rob

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeons - Sayville/Patchogue (Suffolk)

2013-11-09 Thread Derek Rogers
Mill Pond, Sayville:
There were a total of 3 Eurasian Wigeons (1 drake, 2 hens) among roughly over
100 American Wigeons. The drake was nearly in full alternate plumage. Both hens
were dabbling at the far north end of the pond.

Patchogue Lake:
1 drake Eurasian Wigeon, this one in full alternate plumage, favoring the south
end of the lake.

Best,

Derek Rogers
