[nysbirds-l] Dune Rd. Snowy Owl

2013-12-14 Thread leormand .
This morning I found a Snowy Owl near the old Ponquogue Bridge on the N.
side of the bay. It was no longer there when I stopped by in the
afternoon. Only other thing worth a mention was a single Northern Gannet
at L road flying East to West.

Photos of the bird owl can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] eBird.org - Hotspots along Rockaway Beach

2013-12-14 Thread Ben Cacace
In light of the King Eider reports from Rockaway Beach I took a look at the
eBird hotspots there and noticed only one called "Rockaway Park" which is
both the name of a town and a park.

I've setup the following hotspots that should be available in the system
within 12 hours. The first 3 are based on the way some people create
checklists including me ... less is more. The others are more specific
based on the associated neighborhoods.

Rockaway Beach--Beach 9-149
Rockaway Beach--E of Cross Bay Blvd
Rockaway Beach--W of Cross Bay Blvd

Rockaway Beach--Far Rockaway (E of Beach 32)
Rockaway Beach--Edgemere (Beach 32-56)
Rockaway Beach--Arverne (Beach 56-73)
Rockaway Beach--Hammels (Beach 73-94)
Rockaway Beach--Seaside (Beach 94-108)
Rockaway Beach--Rockaway Park (Beach 108-125)
Rockaway Beach--W of Beach 125

Here's the link to the eBird the Hotspot Explorer:
http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspots to search for and display existing
hotspots. Click on View Details after clicking on a marker to see the
latest sightings and Top eBirders for the hotspot.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: nice looking drake Eurasian Wigeon

2013-12-14 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I successfully searched for a Eurasian Wigeon at the Massapequa Preserve -
was at the pond between New Hampshire and Rhode Island Avenues (the pond is
frozen but there's a stream around it with flowing water.) Was in the
company of American Wigeons and a Northern Shoveler. I believe the Eurasian
Wigeon is an annual visitor - there's usually 3 drakes and a hybrid for the
last few years. Also saw Carolina Wrens and Flickers off the trails.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] Northern gannets feeding in Moriches Bay

2013-12-14 Thread Arthur H. Kopelman, Ph.D.
While observing harbor seals at Cupsogue Beach County Park around 9 AM on
Friday, 12/13/13 , I observed about 50 Northern Gannets feeding in Moriches
Bay near the seal haul-out area. In 8 years of seal observation and
photo-identification at the site and over 160 trips, I'd never seen gannets
diving feeding in the bay.

20 harbors seals were swimming in the area as well
