[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl at Orient Point
Yesterday {Sat. 12/21} at ~ 0735, I had the above, a large dark individual. Also seen were ~ 25 C. Eider, ~ 12 N. Gannets,, ~12 C Goldeneyes and 6 Great Cormorant. I also tried briefly for the Pacific Loon seen previously by Guy Tudor at Orient Beach State Park, without connecting. What I did see however, was the largest mixed flock of finches (feeding at the side of the road) that I have seen in quite awhile. There were ~ 50 bids, in close to equal parts. [nysbirds-l] Staten Island (Richmond Co.) incl. Glaucous Gull
Set out today at 7AM with Isaac Grant in an attempt to find a Glaucous Gull for his NYC Big Year here on Staten Island. I have been observing tens of thousands of gulls over Raritan Bay from the bottom of Huguenot Ave over the past week, and convinced him it might be worth looking through them for rarities. In the morning from Wolfe's Pond Park we had two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, an ICELAND GULL (continuing 2nd year bird), and a RED-NECKED GREBE. Around 4 pm we met up at again at Wolfe's Pond as the gulls began coming back in to roost. I told Isaac to stay put while I drove to Tottenville to scan the gulls from the bottom of Joline Ave. As I was packing up, I noticed a large all white gull sitting on a rock at the bottom of Page Ave. Sure enough, it was a first year GLAUCOUS GULL! Isaac Grant, Marie King and Anthony Ciancimino made it down in time to see the bird before it took off heading west. [nysbirds-l] Orange County
Charlie Roberto, Kyle Bardwell and I travelled to black dirt region today. Highlight was 12 Rough legged hawks on rte 94, Indiana road and at oil city road (pine island) 9 of which were light-phased) also 5 kestrel, 3 harrier, lots and lots of horned lark (missed on buntings and longspurs), some savannah sparrows and 14 white crowned (mostly on missionland road) -- got there too late and left too early for SE owls. If you go lunch (and all sorts of to go products) a must at Quaker Creek Store on Pulaski Hwy, Goshen) Sent from my iPhone -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Target birds at the beach
Jones Inlet 21 Dec Birding on both sides of the inlet was and has been slow lately. However, key target birds are in the area and make up for this. This morning on the Pt. Lookout side, there were PURPLE SANDPIPERS, a RUDDY TURNSTONE, and 2 RED KNOT on the west most jetty. RED-NECKED GREBES and HARLEQUIN DUCKS were in the inlet close to the jetty. On the Jones Beach side, the West End parking lot and adjacent swale had a flock of HORNED LARKS with 1 and perhaps more LAPLAND LONGSPUR (the flock alternated between the swale and the parking lot), SNOW BUNTINGS were in the air between the parking lot and the dune line. A SNOWY OWL was atop a dune at the beach line and directly in front of the west section of the Nature Center parking lot. It's a big bird and easily seen in spite of the distance. Binoculars are good and a scope is better. One does not have to chase the bird to get a look. [nysbirds-l] Bald Eagles - Peregrine Falcon Hempstead Lake State Park
Spotted both a mature and immature Bald Eagle at HLSP today. They seem to be prefer the northern most edge of the lake and the lake just north of the Southern State Parkway. The eagles got into a bit of an aerial display and were actually locking talons. Pretty cool to see over a nassau county lake. Also perched at the same lake was a Peregrine Falcon. Later we visited Jones beach and got the Northern Shrike at the West End 2. It was in the lone bare tree close to the south western edge of the parking lot. We then scoped a Snowy Owl a little further east. Not a bad day of birding. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
