[nysbirds-l] Pre CBC check of Hempstead Lake SP

2013-12-24 Thread syschiff
Hempstead Lake State Park' 24 Dec

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) did a pre CBC scouting trip this morning. After
parking at field #3, we walked up to the traverse road and scanned the big
pond. At the extreme north end we found our first target bird, an adult BALD
EAGLE. In the pond were a dozen COMMON MERGANSERS.

We proceeded to Smith Pond which exhibited the usual duck species. It included
RING-NECKED DUCKS and a PIED-BILLED GREBE. On the shores we picked out 3 Great
Blue Herons and 4 imm. BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. A BELTED KINGFISHER flew by.

Next stop was the woods and ponds north of the parkway. Here we found a
RED-TAILED HAWK and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK circling overhead. Land birds
included 8 EASTERN TOWHEES, 6 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 4 WOODPECKER species,
BROWN CREEPER, a winter troop of woodland birds, CAROLINA WRENS, AMERICAN
ROBINS and 2 FOX SPARROWS. The last species of the morning were a pair of
COMMON RAVENS flying by pursued by an AMERICAN CROW..

You're welcome to join us Saturday to help us relocate and count these guys.

Sy

Re: [nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Varied Thrush updates for Sunday?

2013-12-24 Thread Jared Cole
I looked for the Varied Thrush from 1:20pm-2pm today (12/24/2013) by the
Oval Study at Stuyvesant without seeing the bird. Just got home. Two other
birders/photographers were there but they hadn't seen it either, at least
by the time I left.

[nysbirds-l] Hempsstead Lake State Park

2013-12-24 Thread TESSA1
Like Joe and Sy, I also did some pre-CBC scouting at Hempstead Lake
covering a similar broad area, but later in the day - from 2-4PM. I found
some
of the species noted in Sy's post, minus the RS Hawk, Common Mergs, Ravens
and Towhees. 6 GW Teal were on the north side along with many of the
expected half-hardies.The adult Bald Eagle put on a great show, cruising
around
the length of the Reservoir. One significant bird I found not mentioned in
Sy's report was an immature Greater white-fronted Goose. This was found with
about 60 Canadas resting on the grass area near the Carasaul. This is a
small, generally pale bird, much unlike any of the GWF Geese we've come across.
Without getting too long-winded, my overall impression is that this one is
of the "Tundra Race". I have no photos, but it'll be interesting to hear
some commentary on this bird if it sticks around. It was not too skittish
and seemed quite relaxed, having been snoozing when I got on it. I don't
recall any of these other than the "Greenland Race" having been reported in
Zone 10.

Merry Christmas to all,

Bobby Berlingeri
