[nysbirds-l] Bay Park Gulls

2013-12-25 Thread Steve Walter
Bobby's Greater White-fronted Goose report gave me the impetus to do my
Nassau cold weather route from Hempstead to the Mill River to Bay Park. I
never did find the goose. Maybe I needed to know what a Carasaul is. Bay
Park, though, produced. When I arrived, a nicely marked first winter ICELAND
GULL was sitting in the gull flock. Nudged by a Herring Gull, it gave up
easily and quickly flew off. After driving around the rest of the park, I
returned for another check of the gulls, especially as someone was feeding
them. To my surprise, there was a white winged gull dropping in again. But
this one hulked over the Ring-bills - a first winter GLAUCOUS GULL. It stuck
around for a while and I got enough pictures. Not posting any, though.
Parking lot shots aren't the most aesthetic. Also, I just happened to upload
some new offerings at the web site http://www.stevewalternature.com/ , for
anyone that might be interested. The Florida theme features a cormorant
breeding scene on the front page and raptors on the recent work page.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Seacliff Guillemot

2013-12-25 Thread Angus Wilson
Just to add some directions to Seth's update, the Seacliff BLACK GUILLEMOT is
being viewed currently (10:20 AM) from The Boulevard just near the turn onto
Cliff Way. We are looking N and the bird is moving around the area of verticle
white boat mooring floats. About 300 yrds off the beach.

[nysbirds-l] Buffalo Birding in Winter

2013-12-25 Thread matt klein
Will be in Buffalo for the holidays and would like to finish my 2013 NY list
strong. Would appreciate good birding spot recommendations. Is Tifft (sp?) good
now for water fowl or is the water frozen over?

Happy Holidays,

Matt

I looked for the Varied Thrush from 1:20pm-2pm today (12/24/2013) by the Oval
Study at Stuyvesant without seeing the bird. Just got home. Two other
birders/photographers were there but they hadn't seen it either, at least by
the time I left.
