[nysbirds-l] Mt. Loretto/ Ash-throated search+

2014-11-11 Thread Sean Sime
It was a frustrating yet hopeful morning on Staten Island.
I was searching for the flycatcher this morning from before sunrise till 9am.
Passerine morning flight was in full effect with thousands of grackles and
blackbirds on the move along with modest numbers of Purple Finch, Siskin and
Goldfinch.
In one of the flycatcher sighting areas relayed to me by Isaac Grant I heard
vocalizations consistent with the 2 syllable call note and the husky rolling
"br" on two separate occasions with about 40 minutes in between them. I
never did see the bird before I had to leave for work.
While walking the main path listening to the continuing morning flight I heard
two Evening Grosbeak flying SW. Unfortunately I was unable to obtain photo
documentation.
So while I was unable to nail either of these species down, I firmly believe
the flycatcher is still there. I'm interested if any morning flights or hawk
watches in the area witnessed a movement of Evening Grosbeaks today.

Cheers,

Sean Sime

6 snow buntings were seen atop main landfill this morning at Croton Point

for very last moment to fly up at approach of passing runners and dog walkers
and them circling back around to the roadside again.

Also seen was a flock of 32 American Pipits on mowed field south of main
landfill.

Two adult bald eagles were seen perching together in tree b/n main landfill and
the RR bridge. Another bald eagle -- 3rd yr -- seen fishing in Croton Bay.

[nysbirds-l] Footprints in the Field

2014-11-11 Thread Erich Glanz
On a Veterans' Day visit to Calverton National Cemetery today, we observed
footprints of probable cattle egrets on the soil covering several recent
interments. They were next to deer footprints. See below.

Despite searching for over 4 1/2 hours for the Ash-throated Flycatcher at
Mount Loretto this morning/afternoon today it was not seen. I circled the
whole park many times without luck.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Footprints in the Field

2014-11-11 Thread redknot
Erich: Could the footprints you took photos of be turkey tracks? They look like
that to me and since cattle egret are quite uncommon on Long Island this time
of year while turkey are very common I suspect that is what you found.
