Highlights of reports received December 11 through December
18 from the Niagara Frontier Region.
The BOS Christmas Count, centered on Grand Island and
including the Ontario side of the Niagara River, was
conducted on December 14. The reported highlight was a
WESTERN KINGBIRD, south of Chippawa, Ontario, at Stanley
Avenue and Logan Road. The WESTERN KINGBIRD was not found
the next day.
Other count reports from the Niagara River - an unusual
location and number - 19 RED-THROATED LOONS between Chippawa
Creek and Navy Island on the upper river. Also, 4 COMMON
LOONS, 14 HORNED GREBES, 28 LESSER SCAUP and 5 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS, plus numbers of TUNDRA SWANS, REDHEADS, GREATER
SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED MERGANSER,
COMMON MERGANSER, RED-BR. MERGANSER, and one RUDDY DUCK. Off
the river in the Fort Erie and Niagara Falls areas -
PEREGRINE FALCON, MERLIN, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN ROBIN,
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, WHITE-THR. SPARROW and at the same
location as the WESTERN KINGBIRD, a single WHITE-CR.
SPARROW.
For the count on Grand Island, the ROSS'S GOOSE and wing-
tagged TRUMPETER SWAN were still present at the Beaver
Island State Park beach, a GREAT HORNED OWLS and EASTERN
SCREECH-OWLS were heard on the island. On December 16, the
TRUMPETER SWAN was present, but the ROSS'S GOOSE was not
found at the park beach.
Also this week - at the BOS eastern boundary, a SNOWY OWL on
Bank Street, north of the Batavia-Stafford Townline, and two
GREAT HORNED OWLS at the Batavia Waste Water Plant. Another
GREAT HORNED OWL on Meadville Road in the Tonawanda Wildlife
Management Area, and NORTHERN SHRIKE at Cayuga Pool. And in
Buffalo, an unexpected TUFTED TITMOUSE at a feeder on
Woodbridge Ave in the North Park district.
Seasons Greetings, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to
all, and my sincere thanks to the contributors to the Bird
Report. Next update will be Thursday, January 8 in the new
year, unless an rare report is received from holiday birding
efforts. You may report sightings after the tone. Thank you
again for calling and reporting.
