[nysbirds-l] 1/17 South Shore LI: continuing rarities plus female Eurasian Wigeon

2015-01-18 Thread mcb3mb
Yesterday, my dad and I spent time catching up with most of the rarities that have been present in SW Suffolk and southern Nassau counties.Early in the morning, we had the Barnacle, Greater White-fronted, and Cackling Geese at Belmont State Park.  The Nashville and Orange-crowned Warblers were still present at the Walker Street cattail marsh in the Massapequa Preserve.  Finally, around 11:30, we had the Point Lookout Eared Grebes as well as a Red-necked Grebe.  The tide was rapidly flooding up the inlet and none of the speciality grebes were able to be relocated when we left at 1:30.Also of note at Massapequa Preserve was a single adult female Eurasian Wigeon along the creek within a half mile south of the Walker Street bridge.  As far as I'm aware, this bird has not be previously reported but I felt it noteworthy enough to report - not only because it may be sought after for a Nassau Co. year list but also because this seemed to be a good opportunity to study this sex of Eurasian Wigeon within a close (but respectable) range.Photos are posted at the end of an album devoted to female wigeon, starting here:  https://picasaweb.google.com/117391989476777248424/Wigeons#6105690160901668178For those seeking the wigeon, the bird did not strike me as a very bright-headed bird.  I identified it first by its structure and overall plumage: small, squarish head; steep forehead; concolorous mantle and flanks.  Supplementary ID marks include: head color, no black along gape, long primaries, etc.Additionally, the other half of my family (my mom Barbara and my sister Megan) had two of the continuing Bald Eagles flying over Sunrise Hwy at Connetquot.Michael McBrienEast Patchogue, NY & Bristol, RI

RE: [nysbirds-l] House Sparrow at my feeder

2015-01-18 Thread Steve Walter
Since I don't have to be the first one bringing up House Sparrows, I've
posted this interesting one (http://www.stevewalternature.com/ ), seen
recently at the Alley Pond Environmental Center feeder in Queens.
Basically, it looks like the gray areas (of a male) are replaced with brown,
although the chestnut area of the head appears a bit wider than normal.
Other than the odd plumage, it also caught my attention that no other house
sparrows were with it.

Since Junco and House Sparrows are in completely different families this is
an extremely unlikely scenario. More likely a House Sparrow with aberrant
tail feathers.

Hi Everyone,

I know that sounds funny but it must be a hybrid with a Junco. Looks like a
female House Sparrow with a Junco tail. Also had a Fox Sparrow. Both MIA
now,,,I will post a photo later on my blog
www.longislandbirding.blogspot.com. Not best quality since taken thru the
window.

Good winter birding,

[nysbirds-l] Redpoll flock - Tiana Beach

2015-01-18 Thread Pat Palladino
There is a flock of at least 15 Common Redpoll working the edge of the parking
lot on the ocean side of Tiana Beach on Dune Road. The flock originated on the
bay side but eventually ended up on the north east end of the ocean lot.
Observing them now.

[nysbirds-l] Waterfowl Count - Hudson River - Greene County

2015-01-18 Thread Richard Guthrie
I did the Greene County portion of the statewide Waterfowl Count today. I
actually started at Coeymans Landing, Albany County, as in many previous
years. I finished at Smith's Landing, at the south end of the Town of
Catskill.

Except for one or two open spots, the river was totally frozen over. So
that made counting the ducks and geese a lot easier.

The weather started out OK, but deteriorated quickly at about 1 30 in the
afternoon. Then, rain, changing to sleet and freezing rain, prevented me
from going down some rather steep access roads to good viewing spots. Not
that that mattered much anyway, since i could see from a distance that the
river was frozen there also.

The tally was:

Canada Geese: 160 (All in one field, not on the river);

Wood Ducks: 2 (in a spring fed pond, again, away from the river.);

Amer. Black Duck: 1 (alone on the ice way out on the river);

Mallard: 14 (same pond as the Woodies);

Common Mergansers: 50 (all in one of the patches of open water).

In addition, there were:

Bald Eagle: 6
Red-shouldered Hawk: 1
Red-tailed Hawk: 6
Ring-billed Gull: 18
Herring Gull: 19
and some expected common songbirds such as Blue Jays, Cardinals, Juncos and
the like.

I'll post this and a couple of so-so photos of the Red-shouldered Hawk on
my blog: http://blog.timesunion.com/birding
