[nysbirds-l] Flushing Meadows Park - sparrows and geese continue

2016-01-12 Thread Joe DiCostanzo
I was out at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens County today chasing
some of the lingering rarities previously reported there. Both the
previously reported Lark Sparrow and Clay-colored Sparrow were still present
with junco flocks, though they were with different groups of juncos. The two
Cackling Geese were also feeding on the ground with the large flock of
Canada Geese; nearby was a lone Snow Goose. Also seen was a Pine Warbler and
two adult Bald Eagles soaring overhead.

[nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots - State, Counties & Locations Updated (Jan/'16)

2016-01-12 Thread Ben Cacace
Thanks to @Team_eBird for their dedication to keeping eBird.org running
smoothly and for the group of New York State hotspot moderators for their
time working on shared location suggestions.

** New to the New York County (Borough of Manhattan) page are maps in the
links section at the bottom of the page which includes a Google Map of
local raptor sightings in Lower Manhattan including American Kestrel
(purple), Red-tailed Hawk (red), Peregrine Falcon (gray) and Cooper's Hawk
(orange).

http://ebirding-nys.wikispaces.com/New%20York

*Species totals* have been updated for all county pages. This includes the
total number of species with the equivalent color code highlighting the
county name based on the colors used on eBird's maps. The alphabetical list
of counties on the main page has been updated with total spp. #.

*Hotspot pages*: All location pages have been updated on the wiki. These
include 212 pages representing a total of 663 out of 4,299 hotspots (15%).
Updates involve # of species and color codings based on species # along
with updated 2015-2016 periods for the bar chart tables displaying the
Month: Jan./2016 and the current two month period Dec. - Jan./2016 along
with the current year.

*Tide Graphs* exist for New York County, Kings County (Brooklyn) and
Richmond County (Staten Island). There's a quick link to the tide graphs on
the "Go To >" line highlighted in blue for each location. If there are
multiple graphs on a page the left/right is generally north/south or
west/east. If you spot any issues please let me know off line.

For the following counties there are pages for the *Top 10 locations* at
the beginning of the list of shared locations: Cayuga, Erie, Monroe,
Niagara, Orange, Oswego, Seneca, Tompkins, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens,
Richmond (Staten Island), Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties. For New
York County (Borough of Manhattan) all hotspots have links to shared
location pages.

*Bar Charts (Species Lists)*: For all county and location pages there are
tables showing months, seasons and several time frames for the current
year. Clicking any of these will bring up a complete list of species and
other taxa with bar charts representing abundance. To see a list of species
for *all* periods click on the name above the months i.e. 'New York State
(471 spp.)' or 'Cayuga County (303 spp.)'.

*Map of sightings*: After bringing up a bar chart list you'll see a MAP
button to the right of each species. Clicking this will produce a map of
the latest sightings. Red icons show sightings within the past 30 days.
Click on the icons to see a list of who reported each species and click on
'Checklist' to view their submission.

Click 'Overview' on any of the wiki pages to bring up a sortable list of
all species along with the latest checklists submitted and a list of the
Top eBirders.

Check out 'My Location Life List', 'My County Life List' and 'My State Life
List' links on their respective pages.

Click on '*Google Map Directions*' to bring up a Google Map page. On Google
Maps click 'Directions' then 'Transit' to plot a public transportation
route. By clicking 'More Options and Times' you can refine your search.

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting

The Painted Bunting is likely to stick around this weekend, the weather looks
to be ideal and so, coupled with the extensive news coverage over the last few
days, we are likely to see a sizable crowd over the next few days as people may
be making long treks to catch a sighting of 3PB (Prospect Park Painted Bunting).

We all ask you to please be mindfull of the planted areas when visiting the
bird and, as responsible members of the birding community, please politely
encourage others to do so as well. The Horticultural Supervisor yesterday
moved everyone off even the wood chip area where people had been moving into
for closer looks. John Jordan, Director of Landscape Management for the PP
Alliance, has asked us all to be extra mindful of the plantings up on this
wonderful green roof habitat and that, besides the plantings themselves, there
are some none too sturdy buried irrigation equipment that we risk damaging by
impacting these areas.

There are plenty of paved pathways offering good viewing vantage points and the
Painted Bunting has been very cooperative in that he doesn't seem to ever leave
the general area in, on and around the green roof on top of the Lefrak Skating
Center.

There are clean bathrooms, a snack bar and the Bluestone Cafe for your
convenience right there at the Lefrak Center to make your trip enjoyable when
you come to enjoy this magnificent little adventurer as well as the rest of
Prospect Park. We have bird feeders set up a short distance away on Breeze
Hill that are starting to attract some bird activity and please feel free to
enjoy the rest of our wonderful urban forest on your visit.

A nice way of saying thanks to the bird and the park would be to become a
member of the Prospect Park Alliance if you feel so inclined. Membership dues
contribute to the maintenance of this heavily traffic urban habitat.

https://www.prospectpark.org/get-involved/join-the-alliance/become-member/

Lefrak Center is best accessed through the entrance at Parkside and Ocean
Avenues. There is street parking in the area and the Q subway stops right
there (Parkside stop.)
