[nysbirds-l] Enjoying 4 +'s today !

2016-04-06 Thread robert adamo
Tax Day found me in a hopeful mood while motoring toward Bohemia, and our
accountant, after seeing a lone T.V. in Calverton (could it be "Lonesome
George" of the last few years) and a Cooper's Hawk over the LIE in Yaphank.
Good fortune continued, in that we owe less on one return, than we will be
refunded on the other ! Finally, at the farm pond on Sound Ave in Baiting
Hollow, a Red-tailed Hawk was having it's dinner, which, due to the
victim's size and color of it's fur, I took to be a Woodchuck.

Cheers,
Bob

Also, Glossy Ibis - NO. Because I didn't try. Was I supposed to? Glossy Ibis

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Egrets

2016-04-06 Thread Jim Osterlund
Always pleased at what I regard a sign of Spring really beginning, I found 8
Snowy Egret in the Terrell River Preserve, Center Moriches, Suffolk County.
Admittedly, they were huddled on a leeward shoreline to escape the rather cool
breeze, but they were there, as were a pair of Osprey; they, too, were perched
alee rather than out near the nest platform.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 4/6

2016-04-06 Thread Thomas Fiore

Wednesday, 6 April, 2016
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

A Louisiana Waterthrush first noted at The Pond (& within Hallett
Sanctuary then) yesterday was again present in the same general area
today, found very slightly to the north above Gapstow arch, a stone
bridge that spans the north-northeast section of the Pond... this area
is in the southeast corner of the park, and is just below the
"downtown" skating rink of the park. Not a whole lot of other
migrants in, but still a few Pine Warblers, a few Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers, & other birds of the early spring, in various locations
all around the park, but quite thinly distributed again.

A check of the reservoir earlier in the day revealed no new arrivals,
& still some of the same lingering species as reported there
yesterday. A couple of Great Egrets were again seen flying over the n.
end, & at least one came across the reservoir early in the day.

good birding, and thanks to all the many getting reports out on
various birds around N.Y.S.!
