Hi all,
You know about the phalarope, but there were also three Buff-breasted
Sandpipers at the swale. Seen with Mike Zito just before 7pm.

[nysbirds-l] Birding Hermine on Long Island, 5 Sep

2016-09-07 Thread Shaibal Mitra
I’m writing this summary to tie together a number of overlapping but incomplete
conversations with many people over the past several days, and to draw a few
conclusions from what we observed.

I’ll remember Hermine most for how much she inconvenienced us with her timing!
It seemed like it took forever for the storm to arrive, and by the time things
became interesting, I was facing early morning drives to work on Staten Island
on Tuesday and today. Still her prolonged gyrations offshore were probably
responsible for some notable and memorable bird records.

First, it’s important to note that the overall pattern exemplified by Hermine
is very commonplace here: a middling tropical cyclone approaching from the
south, producing easterly winds and heavy surf on the LI shore, then passing
off to the east. Taken broadly, these events are very characteristic of the
Labor Day period here. One can generally expect to see increased occurrence of
species such as American Golden-Plover, Buff-breasted Sandpiper (and other
long-distance migrant sandpipers), Lesser Black-backed Gull, and Caspian and
Black Terns in these situations—presumably because they are reluctant to
continue their long flights under these conditions and arriving migrants
therefore accumulate along our ocean inlets. This phenomenon was a very
conspicuous consequence of Hermine, probably due especially to the unusual
duration of the obstacle she posed to southbound migration.

Another feature of these periods of easterly winds is a pronounced movement of
common seabirds, especially Common Terns and Laughing Gulls, but also things
like Northern Gannet and Cory’s Shearwater, flying west to east along the LI
shoreline as storms approach from the south. I’ve never seen a fully
satisfactory explanation for this phenomenon, but I’m aware of two conjectures.
One is that “birds always fly into the wind.” This makes sense not only in its
almost absurd simplicity, but also to the extent that some species might simply
be compensating for being drifted east to west overnight. The other hypothesis
is my own and posits that the local seabirds know exactly where they are and
also where the local shorelines are, and they respond to approaching storms by
fleeing to the east to avoid being driven ashore by hurricanes. (This is
potentially consistent with the previous explanation, which could be the
proximate cue underlying this ultimate cause.) Part of my reasoning in support
of this explanation is the marked disparity in groundings of various pelagic
species during real hurricane strikes (which Hermine categorically was NOT),
wherein locally rare species of distant origin are paradoxically found inland
far more frequently than the their common kin inhabiting the nearby shelf
waters (e.g., Leach’s vs. Wilson’s Storm-Petrels and many others). It is really
remarkable that our commonest shelf-inhabiting seabirds (Cory’s, Great, and
Manx Shearwaters, etc.) are almost never recorded inland, whereas a number of
tropical and Gulf Stream Species are actually predictably regular inland after
strong storms.

Hermine was not a strong storm here and did not come close to striking us, but
it was very interesting to see the classic pre-storm procession of Gannets,
Cory’s Shearwaters, Laughing Gulls, and Common Terns streaming eastward as she
approached. Furthermore, we could actually discern when this changed on Monday.
Whereas the flight was still very pronounced from west to east during the
morning, it shifted the other way in the early afternoon. The wind also shifted
at this time, losing its easterly component and going almost during north,
presumably as the storm center shifted somewhat to the north and east.

Birding with Patricia Lindsay, Pete Morris and Taylor Sturm, my overall
impression was that Hermine was a very good example of Labor Day easterly
winds: we encountered lots of White-rumped Sandpipers (and other interesting
shorebirds), Lesser Black-backed Gulls (including a very early juvenile), and
Black Terns, as well as notable near-shore movements of Cory’s and Manx
Shearwaters, Northern Gannets, and Parasitic Jaegers—all species expected to be
present in the region already but harder to detect under normal conditions.

In view of all of this, Black-capped Petrel was not expected, but perhaps the
unusually long duration of the powerful winds as Hermine lingered over the Gulf
Stream tired or disoriented some of the birds residing there. Below are links
to our checklists from Monday. It was a very interesting and rewarding day but
definitely slow at times. More than once, after hitting a slow period, we
vacillated between focusing on seabirds vs. shorebirds, only to encounter new
surprises that shifted our expectations.

[nysbirds-l] Red-breasted Nuthatches in the Bronx

2016-09-07 Thread Deborah Allen
New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY
Wednesday September 7, 2016
OBS: Robert DeCandido, PhD

More evidence of a Red-breasted Nuthatch irruption:

This morning in two hours at the NYBG Bob observed 21 Red-breasted Nuthatches,
including 10 in one Cedar of Lebanon just outside the Rock Garden.

Conversely, yesterday on a visit to Bartow-Pell in Pelham Bay Park from 4-5PM
none were observed in conifers in the area of the parking lot.

On June 26th our bird walk group saw a Red-breasted Nuthatch at the Maintenance
Field spotted by Jeff Ward. The day before (June 25th) we found two
Red-breasted Nuthatches at the NYBG in the Bronx. These June reports certainly
appear to have been an early indication of an irruption year.

Hoping for Xbills,

Deb Allen

Re: [nysbirds-l] Calverton Grasslands - Developer wins bid...

2016-09-07 Thread leormand
Here is the link to the subdivision map:

http://www.townofriverheadny.gov/docview.aspx?docid=44620

Here is the link to "all the documents" which is certainly overwhelming to
those unfamiliar with the Ins and outs of these type of projects:

http://www.townofriverheadny.gov/pview.aspx?id=32339

Anyway with new / different / detailed information please chime in. I'm not an
expert - this is just my understanding of where we are at with EPCAL currently.

Also, keep in mind that the grasslands on the North side of 25 (old radar
station) are preserved (I think by the state) and are actively managed as a
grassland.

[nysbirds-l] Sound Analysis Workshop, Ithaca NY, Oct 3-7, 2016

2016-09-07 Thread Liz D. Rowland
As the season for recording night flight calls is upon us, you might be
interested in attending the upcoming Sound Analysis
Workshop run by
the Bioacoustics Research Program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca, NY
from Monday October 3rd to Friday October 7th, 2016. This workshop covers basic
principles of spectrographic analysis and measurement of animal sounds, as well
as specific tools and techniques in Raven Pro. The workshop is intended
primarily for biologists interested in analysis, visualization, and measurement
of animal sounds. The standard fee is $1,400, but there is a discounted rate of
$1,050 for registered students (Bachelors, Masters or PhD.). The fee covers
tuition, lunches, and a complimentary 1-yr license for
Raven. We currently
have 3 places available. More details can be found on the BRP

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 9/7

2016-09-07 Thread Thomas Fiore

Wednesday, 7 September, 2016 -
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

From about sunrise thru 8 a.m. or so, & also later in the morning, a
Connecticut Warbler (seen on TUES) was looked-for, by at least a dozen
birders, probably more, & apparently remained unseen by those I saw or
spoke with on-site (location as in mine & Anders' posts for 9/6) -
although the bird may still be in the park & even perhaps in that same
area of the park, but behaving a bit more (typically) skulking - seen
this morning again in the same area have been some Common
Yellowthroats and what seemed an even greater number of American
Redstarts (which are more numerous this Wed., over all of the park
than the prior days).

A fine variety of species are being seen this day by groups led by &
for the NYC Audubon organization & by & for the American Museum of
Natural History, both fine non-profit organizations worthy of our
support. Many highlights include the on-going sightings of very many
Red-breasted Nuthatches, which have been occurring in this park - &
throughout the NYC region and far beyond - for months now, with by now
many hundreds of observations documented by at least that many
observers, over more than a dozen states in the eastern U.S. (and in
numbers in some instances that appear to be nearly unprecedented,
outside of major irruptive movements). Thanks to the many observers
this morning offering comments, and efforts to seek out various birds.

For easy reference, & a gentle reminder, here are the American Birding
Association's Code of Birding Ethics, which have been approved-of by
thousands of the most reputable organizations including hundreds of
birding clubs & conservation organizations throughout this hemisphere
and elsewhere, and in principle by the American Ornithologists Union
and many other scientific organizations, as well as responsible nature-
loving individuals everywhere on the planet. (For those unfamiliar
with the code of ethics, please read at least the first paragraphs of
the short document and use it as a simple guide to our responsible &
respectful birding on a daily basis) - thank you. SEE http://listing.aba.org/ethics/

Thank you for the quick and detailed response. Are these plans posted
anywhere for public review?

If anyone else has additional information, please do share with the
community. We ought to keep an eye on the developments over there so that
we are not scrambling to stave off any destruction of habitat.

Thanks again Luke.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Calverton Grasslands - Developer wins bid...

2016-09-07 Thread leormand
It is my understanding that it goes in line with the recently approved
subdivision. The subdivision preserves nearly all existing grasslands though it
carves out some lots along the entrance/25A.

I seem to recall that the runways will be ripped up and planted with grasslands
- the hope is for a driving / walking trail but that would come at a much later
date.

What I don't know is how this all fits in with the "drone" manufacturer
"luminati" which of courses utilizes the eastern runway.

Anyone have more info?

[nysbirds-l] Calverton Grasslands - Developer wins bid...

2016-09-07 Thread Andrew Baksh
If I missed this posted already please forgive my redundancy. I was
recently made aware of this by fellow birder and conservationist Jade
Fallon. Travelling got in the way but being back in the area, I am curious
to know if anyone or group out in the LI area is aware and making any
queries as to what this could mean in terms of affecting the grasslands at
Calverton. Thanks in advance.

[nysbirds-l] Red-breasted Nuthatches

2016-09-07 Thread Andrew Baksh
I usually don't ever post any backyard sightings save for noteworthy
observations, which of course is subjective.

In in the interest of data mining and tracking irruptive behavior, I thought it
might be worth posting my observation of 5 Red-breasted Nuthatches in the
backyard just a few minutes ago.

I was alerted to the presence of the said species and did a bit of pishing to
get a sense of how many since I detected by ear, multiple birds. This is a
high backyard count for me and falls in line with earlier reports of RBNU
(Red-breasted Nuthatches) showing up in several other locations in our area.

Could this mean that we might see Pine Siskins, Purple Finches and Crossbills
in decent numbers our way this year??

Cheers,
