[nysbirds-l] Great Gray Owls
For those thinking about coming up to Robert Moses State Park near Massena New York for the Great Gray Owls they do continue as of this evening. Seen around 5:00pm until dark on Robinson Bay Road. A chorus of Coyotes was a nice ending to the day. Robert A. [nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 2/21
Tuesday - 21 February, 2017 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City tapping into Pat P's prior reporting for the CP reservoir, as of 4 p.m. this (Tuesday, 2/21) afternoon there were, at the reservoir: Common Loon (one) Red-necked Grebe (one: this the one that was 'rehabbed', & then released into the reservoir) Pied-billed Grebe (two) Each of these in basic ("winter") plumage, and all have been moving about the entire reservoir when viewed. The Loon (& any loon that drops in at the CP reservoir) may be hard to spot at times as it (any) can ride low in the water &/or be diving often, and not be as 'obvious', at times. There are also a few Double-crested Cormorants in the park, which tend to come & go: often one or more in the reservoir, to be sorted out in grebe & loon-seeking. I've seen as many as five cormorants there, & that many at times on the CP reservoir alone in the past few days. Hooded Mergansers continue in the park, but are fewer than had been, the better site just recently seems to be the Meer, but at least two (a pair) were at the reservoir today, seen in in the NE quadrant in afternoon. Northern Shovelers continue in excellent numbers on the lake, and to a lesser extent on up to 3 other waterbodies (reservoir, Meer, & Turtle Pond). Many of the other recent species in Central Park are continuing: one worth a new mention is the Red-headed Woodpecker that's west of East 68th Street in the park, now showing much red about the head in good views and bright sun. - - - - - - - - - kiusaamista vastaan! [nysbirds-l] Long Island Woodcocks
The strange shorebirds of the forest are starting to ramp up their breeding displays. I witnessed multiple males peenting and sky dancing yesterday evening in Great River and early this morning in Woodbury. Territorial disputes took place at both locations, featuring vocalizations I'd never heard as rivals strafed each other. At least one interested female was seen flying from the immediate vicinity of a singing male.
