[nysbirds-l] Clarke's Grebe Oswego Harbor, Oswego County NY...

2017-02-22 Thread Andrew Baksh
Thanks Menachem for the earlier post.

Here are some additional details on the Clarke's Grebe initially identified as
Western which was reported at Oswego Harbor this morning. See report from the
Oneida list serve below.

http://birding.aba.org/mobiledigest/NY08#1245338

Later on, other birders obtained enough documentation that appears to rule out
Western. See the eBird checklist link with photos and vocalizations.

[nysbirds-l] Clark's Grebe Oswego Harbor

2017-02-22 Thread Menachem Goldstein
The large grebe which was earlier reported to ebird as a Western Grebe is now
thought to be a Clark's Grebe per Tim Lenz and Brad Walker!  This appears to be
the First State Record!
Hope it sticks!

[nysbirds-l] South Fork birds (and bats)

2017-02-22 Thread Bruce Horwith
The black guillemot and iceland gull continue at Lake Montauk. I didn't
find the black-headed or little gull at Ditch Plains, but there were 3
purple sandpipers in with the sanderlings. But the highlight for me was
seeing a bat, presumably a little brown bat, working the insects over a
small pond in my yard in East Hampton. This was the first time I have seen
one here so active during the day, and by far the earliest bat activity I
have seen out here.

[nysbirds-l] Additional South Shore birds

2017-02-22 Thread Tim Healy
The American Bittern at JFK Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary continues. It flushed
from a channel away from the lot and flew towards the roadside marsh. Jones had
a nice spread of expected winter species, including three Razorbills off the
end of the jetty. I caught up with Harlequin Ducks at Point Lookout, though
they were apparently at Jones before a dramatic raptor-on-raptor battle nearby
sent them fleeing. Cedar Beach Marina was mostly quiet, but the male
Boat-tailed Grackles are displaying.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Oak Beach Barrow's Goldeneye - Yes

2017-02-22 Thread Tim Healy
The female Barrow's Goldeneye continues near the Sore Thumb with her Common
cousins. No eiders in sight and no grebes other than a lone Horned. A nice
consolation prize was the chance to record vocalizing Red-throated Loons. I'd
never heard them call before, even when I've seen individuals in breeding
range! More searching and reports to follow.

Cheers!
