The probable Kittiwake of 11/5/17 was positively ID'd thanks to
Patrick Horan's photos

they may be seen here:

Additionally, Ian Resnick and I found a Lapland Longspur yesterday
in the OB lot.

Believe it or not some of us choose not give Zuckerberg our $ (for too many
reasons to mention on this forum), are these pics available elsewhere? Either
way a nice find.

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwits at Heckscher SP Suffolk Co.

2017-11-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
This morning there were were two juvenile Hudsonian Godwits present in
the Field 7 lot, neither of which had any afflictions, meaning there is
at least one other juvenile to add to the total number of godwits
frequenting the lot. (The tumor-afflicted juvenile was not seen while I
was there.) A Pectoral Sandpiper was also present.

The adult Hudwit with the injured leg eventually flew in from the east
with a flock of 28 Black-bellies and some Dunlin, and sat down on a
grassy strip on the west side of the lot. The puddles in the grass on
the east side are no more, and the puddle in the lot itself is fast
disappearing.

[nysbirds-l] Seasonally unusual species Robert Moses SP, Suffolk Co.

2017-11-06 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Following yesterday's report of our very late Blue Grosbeak at Jones
Beach, and reports of Indigo Buntings and other seasonally unusual
migrants at Sandy Hook, NJ, this morning, Shai Mitra is at Robert Moses
checking to see what's there. He reports very few birds, but among those
he's found so far are two White-eyed Vireos, two Northern Parulas, an
Indigo Bunting and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Seasonally unusual species Robert Moses SP, Suffolk Co.

2017-11-06 Thread Fred Baumgarten
Saturday morning there was an Indigo Bunting on the Sarah Lawrence College
campus in Yonkers. I did not see it, but heard it's distinctive call and
was certain that's what it was, especially since your message confirms they
are lingering. In addition, we had a first for the campus, a fly-over
Red-shouldered Hawk, which also turned out to be part of a larger
phenomenon, a record flight, apparently.

[nysbirds-l] Seawatch Report Queens Co.

2017-11-06 Thread Andrew Baksh
I did an early morning Seawatch in Queens covering Riis Park and Breezy
Point. The seabird flight was sparse and not the steady stream of birds
that I would have liked. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable due to the overcast
and cool conditions.

All 3 Scoter species, small flocks of Common Eiders, several hundred
Northern Gannets and Tree Swallows made up the majority of birds on the
move. Smaller numbers included Red-throated Loons, Double-crested
Cormorants, Laughing Gulls and few Red-breasted Mergansers.

The conditions made it easy to pick out Terns over the Ocean and I ended up
with 17 Forster's and 11 Royal Terns. A few Royal Terns might be moving
between the two sites so I tried to be conservative with my numbers.

A mixed flock of about 110 shorebirds seen from Riis heading west included
1 White-rumped Sandpiper, 15 Purple Sandpipers, 1 Ruddy Turnstone and 27
Dunlins with the rest Sanderlings.

The number of loafing Gulls on the beach was not impressive; one banded
Herring Gull and a 2 CY Lesser Black-backed Gull were my only highlights.

Cheers,

On the NYS eBird Hotspots pages for all 62 counties from Albany to Yates
I've added links to observations with images for Birds, Butterflies plus
Dragonflies & Damselflies. See 'Local Links' section near the bottom of

Links are for 'All species' with links to a map of sightings or a grid of
images. The 'Needs ID' links are for observations lacking a corroborating
ID from another person.

Projects specific to a location in a county have been added where they
exist. If you know of a project on iNaturalist that is active please let me
know. See New York County page below for example projects:
