[nysbirds-l] 12/6 Staten Island, NYC (NO re-find of Varied Thrush, redux)
Thursday, 6 December. At Clove Lakes Park, Richmond County, NY. As Sean Sime posted previously; then supplemented on Thurs. eve. (12/6) via more local birders, perhaps over a dozen birders tried, & at varying times of day, to re-find the previous day’s Varied Thrush with NO luck on anyone’s part for Thursday - some, including the original finder, were still out looking at the end of the day in the same areas. I joined the effort for a bit in midday, and also came up with no rare birds there. I noticed (& as some of the Staten Islanders already saw) that there is habitat in many - many! - private yards, just out of the park boundaries. If that Varied Thrush is still in the vicinity, and it could well be, it might depend on a further appearance in the public city park, unless by good chance a home-owner or other neighborhood resident were to notice a rather unusual bird in their yard or just in the area, on a quiet side street, & etc. What makes that latter scenario a bit more plausible is that that is exactly where any number of this species, as vagrants, have shown up, in private neighborhoods, or at least spending part of a non-breeding season in such an area. Since Clove Lakes Park is well-known & popular with a lot of birders, at least the place of this vagrant’s sighting will likely be watched, & reported on, should a reappearance take place. It could be much more a matter of sheer luck, should this bird turn up, found by a 'non-birder’. It’s certainly a species that also just might get someone who finds one yet has no idea what kind of bird, to become more interested in looking at birds. And this individual found on Wed. just might still be near that area. Thanks to birders of Staten Island, a.k.a. Richmond County NY, of whom perhaps 10 (or more?) were able to see the Varied Thrush on 12/5 (Wed.) at Clove Lakes Park in the northern portion of the island, for their reports, including some via the SINaturaList group, as well as in eBird, & HERE, too etc. Catherine Barron of Staten Island (Richmond Co.) found the bird on Wednesday & started to get the word out. https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S50462821 Seth Wollney also of Staten Island posted several photos of the Varied Thrush when seen a bit later, same day. https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S50446002 Although very far north, it was interesting to see that a Varied Thrush was seen, and photographed, in Vermont on Thurs. (12/6). Perhaps some others will also come to light as the season moves along.
