[nysbirds-l] Razorbill Movement- Old Inlet, Lapland Longspur, Smiths Point, Suffolk County
This afternoon at approximately 3:30 pm, there was a extremely large movement of Alcids comprising of mostly Razorbills on the Ocean front east of the Old inlet. It was just at low tide. I started counting groups of 25 to 30 Razorbills and lost count around the 200 mark. The birds were in small groups and hunting in groups. The Razorbills would dive and then resurface in a group. This set off a frenzy with the numerous gulls present. The flotilla was drifting with the tide in an easterly direction. Not to miss out on the Feast, Red-throated Loons and Horned Grebes worked closer to shore. Their numbers were approximately 60 Red-throated loons and 40-50 Horned Grebe. Scope was necessary to adequately identify the birds. As a toss in the previously reported Lapland Longspur was with a flock of 4 Horned Larks at the traffic Circle. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Jones beach Coast guard Station
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) viewed the bar and inlet. The bar contained the 3 gull species, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS and a few DUNLIN. In the water were all three SCOTERS SPECIES, a dozen COMMON EIDER, 75 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, 2 BUFFLEHEAD and a HORNED GREBE. Nice to see the winter ducks close to the car on a freezing, but lovely morning. [nysbirds-l] NYUD (Ulster/Dutchess) Christmas Bird Count Saturday, December 29, 2018
Greetings,The 8th annual NYUD Christmas Bird Count is fast approaching being held this year on Saturday, December 29th. Two sectors (Saugerties and Cheviot) are both in need of a few more birders. The opportunities are different; in Saugerties (Ulster County) we need an independent birder or four to cover a portion of a large sector, while in Cheviot (Columbia County) volunteers would be joining an existing field party that covers the entire sector. A full day commitment is not required but would be appreciated. A post count compilation will be conducted in Kingston and food and beverages are provided. If you are interested please contact me as soon as possible.
