RE:[nysbirds-l] [geneseebirds-googlegroup] Spotted Towhee - Tifft Nature Preserve, Buffalo

2019-11-18 Thread Willie D'Anna
Several birders were out looking for the Spotted Towhee all of this afternoon.
Two Eastern Towhees were found but the Spotted was not seen. Perhaps a one-day
wonder…

Good birding!

An apparent SPOTTED TOWHEE was photographed at Tifft Nature Preserve Sunday by
Brad Felton. I just found out about this (11:30 am, Monday) and I don’t know if
people have been looking for it yet. It was posted to the Buffalo-Niagara
Facebook group about an hour ago.

Good birding!

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click "Show All" to see all locations on one
page
— You can sort the list by clicking on any of the headers: Location,
Country, State/Province, County, Type* or # of Checklists
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) by
clicking "Edit" on the right side of the line
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark for "Delete after merging" selected
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

[nysbirds-l] "Bats of New York City" - a Queens County Bird Club presentation this Weds. Nov. 20.

2019-11-18 Thread Nancy Tognan
The Queens County Bird Club will be meeting at the Alley Pond Environmental
Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd, Douglaston, NY 11362 >Map of location<
at 8:00 pm this Wednesday, November 20, 2019. Free
admission. Refreshments will be served starting 7:30pm.

Our guest speaker will be Kaitlyn Parkins, presenting "Nocturnal Neighbors:
The Bats of New York City”
Bats, one of the largest mammal groups, play a vital role in our
ecosystem, even in New York City. Kaitlyn Parkins, a conservation biologist
for New York City Audubon, will discuss the secret lives of the bats that live
in and migrate through the city—who is here, what they are doing, and where to
find them. She will present findings from over five years of research,
including how bats use green roofs as foraging habitat. She will also discuss
the threats to our bat populations and some of the work being done to mitigate
these threats.
Parkins studied at Fordham University, receiving a master’s degree in
ecology and a graduate certificate in conservation biology. Her other field
work includes monitoring bird-building collisions in the city and studying
beach-nesting shorebirds and colonial waterbirds in the NY Harbor.

Hope to see you Wednesday!

As far as the Montauk Pelican info, I received a excellent photo and report
late Sunday evening, of an immature Brown Pelican - with a metal right leg
band(not readable, but clearly visible), seen Sunday afternoon on the Town of
Southampton Commercial Fishing Dock. I believe this matches the description of
the Montauk bird.

An extensive search this morning - 8am-11am- of that area - from west
Shinnecock Inlet to Post La Bridge, Quogue - was not successful in relocating
the bird. Various docks and coves on the “mainland” side of the bay were also
checked.

A word of caution- there is possibly another breach of the dunes again near the
commercial dock. Equipment was attempting to pile more sand on the oceans
side, however two hours prior to high tide, the waves were already cresting
over the
dune, and spilling on to Dune Rd.

[nysbirds-l] Spotted Towhee - Tifft Nature Preserve, Buffalo

2019-11-18 Thread Willie D'Anna
An apparent SPOTTED TOWHEE was photographed at Tifft Nature Preserve Sunday
by Brad Felton. I just found out about this (11:30 am, Monday) and I don't
know if people have been looking for it yet. It was posted to the
Buffalo-Niagara Facebook group about an hour ago.

Good birding!
