[nysbirds-l] location given for Townsends Warbler, Queens County NYC -Forest Park- 12/29

2023-12-29 Thread Tom Fiore
Thanks to K. Mirth, a location of the lingering Townsends Warbler in Forest
Park was - on Friday morning, 12/29 - at and around these coordinates-
40.702599, -73.845802 when seen by a small group of observers. This warbler
may have been present in that park for many weeks by now. This sector of Forest
Park is to the east of Woodhaven Blvd. - which is a major avenue that roughly
bisects that park into two large sectors.

good birds,

[nysbirds-l] Townsends Warbler, more exact location? FRI., 12/29 Forest Park, Queens County, NY

2023-12-29 Thread Tom Fiore
Apologies if the following appears in this list-serve shortly - hello Queens
County birders, how about a location within large Forest Park in Queens, N.Y.
City for the Townsends Warbler thats apparently now understood to have lingered
for weeks there, and refound a few times by now, and by 12/29 seen by multiple
observers. Thanks!

—-
The 7th day in a row In Bronx County NYC, for the lingering MacGillivrays
Warbler that has been seen Fri. morning by multiple obs, in the area of parking
lot at southwest cor. of West 231 St, and Independence Ave., also seen, and
heard chipping from a weedy lot immediately west away from that parking lot -
these sites can be viewed from and next to W. 231 St, a public NYC street.
Observers are still coming to find this Bronx warbler from multiple other
counties, and the same will be so for any findable, lingering vagrant, such as
the lingering Townsends Warbler in Queens. For the Riverdale-Bronx locations,
please do not walk or drive into the property of the large nursing home,
birders have specifically been requested to no-longer go in to those private
areas. It seems the MacGillivrays has been showing a bit more near 231 St,
south side of that street.

Good birding to all,

Tom Fiore

[nysbirds-l] Captree CBC Summary (Suffolk Co.)

2023-12-29 Thread Brent Bomkamp
The Captree Christmas Bird Count took place Sunday, December 17, 2023.
The Captree CBC circle extends from Amityville in the west to Sayville in
the east, and from Robert Moses State Park in the south to Commack in the
north. Weather on the count day was relatively mild, with winds 10-15 kts
from the ESE and temps ranging from 48-54 F. Forecasted rain held off
until the late afternoon and did not interfere with the count.

A total of *133 species* were recorded, which represents the fourth-highest
species total since the Captree CBC was started in 1962 (144 species in
1971 remains the all-time high). One new species, Black-throated Blue
Warbler, was added to the all-time species list. Noteworthy sightings
include:

   - 8 Cackling Geese (Connetquot, East)
   - Eurasian Wigeon (Connetquot)
   - Clapper Rail (East)
   - Semipalmated Plover (Jones)
   - Black-legged Kittiwake (Fire)
   - Iceland Gull (Jones)
   - American Bittern (Heckscher)
   - Snowy Egret (Gardiner)
   - Turkey Vulture (Gardiner)
   - Seaside Sparrow (East)
   - Black-throated Blue Warbler (Gardiner)

An incredible 14 high counts were set, mostly attributable to the mild
weather preceding the count and long-term population trends for certain
species:

   - 216 Mute Swans
   - 20 Greater Yellowlegs
   - 159 Double-crested Cormorants
   - 8 Bald Eagles
   - 11 Peregrine Falcons
   - 61 Monk Parakeets
   - 73 Tree Swallows
   - 20 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
   - 2134 American Robins
   - 31 Gray Catbirds
   - 177 Northern Mockingbirds
   - 210 Boat-tailed Grackles
   - 5 Orange-crowned Warblers
   - 6 Pine Warblers

Thank you to the Seatuck Environmental Association for graciously hosting
the compilation at the Suffolk County Environmental Center, to the Great
South Bay Audubon Society for sponsoring the compilation dinner, and to all
participants for volunteering for the CBC. Next year's count will take
place on Sunday, December 15, 2024.

Best,

Re: [nysbirds-l] location given for Townsends Warbler, Queens County NYC -Forest Park- 12/29

2023-12-29 Thread Jennifer Wilson-Pines
The bird was seen at 2 locations this morning, early by Jeff Ritter and Bob
Pronowich at 40.704486, -73.847447 along the bridal path, then about 10:30
at the pines along Forest Park Drive. There is easy parking along Myrtle
Ave near the Forest Park Dr bridge, where ther is a stair case up to the
trail head and drive
