From what I've been told, in order to buy the fishing parking permit you
actually have to show up at the Ryan Visitor Center at Floyd Bennett Field
carrying a fishing rod. I don't know if that really is required, but people I
know who have the permit say they did that.I wonder how it'd go over if we
showed up carrying a bucket of fish?

2022-02-03 Thread Adelia Honeywood
When I went recently we parked at Fort Tilden and then took a Lyft over to the
Fisherman's Lot at Breezy. You can also take the Q35 bus until just over the
Marine Pkwy Bridge and take an Uber or Lyft from there.
I agree with Stanley though that a national park is supposed to be accessible
to all - or at least to a wider pool of stakeholders. The NPS in recent years
has been very public campaigning to attract greater diversity in visitors.
Having an area that is accessible to nobody but a gated community and a few
permit holders is not in keeping with their stated values regarding a public
resource (which all of our tax dollars pay for). Reaching out to the
Congressional reps and the Parks Service itself to point this out couldn't hurt
and may attract attention.
(And I realize in saying this, that it will still only be most easily
accessible to drivers, which is a bigger issue...)

Maybe one member of the group can drop the others off and then if another

Re: [nysbirds-l] Long Island's rare geese

2022-01-14 Thread Adelia Honeywood
Long Island's waterfowl hunting season ends on January 30th except for Snow
Geese which is until March 6th. After January 30th should we still exercise
these precautions with eBird? Should we wait until March 6th if people hunting
Snow Geese might go for other geese species?
(I look up the season dates every year and avoid going to Jones Beach until the
duck season is over ...)

It has become very clear here on LI that hunters have caught on to eBird, the

using information obtained from birders. One of the only Pink-footed Geese in
the Riverhead area last winter was shot this way, and we personally know of

The problem is most acute in the Riverhead area and on the South Fork, from
November to the end of hunting season (9 Feb for Canada Goose, 6 Mar for Snow
Goose). We understand that the birding community does not want war with the
hunters, but the situation here is very sensitive--everybody knows the very
limited number of specific fields used by the geese, and it seems a shame that
the rarer species are being exposed to this level of danger.

We would suggest Cackling, Ross's, Barnacle, Pink-footed, and Greater
White-fronted Geese, and of course any mega rare species, seen in these areas
not be reported until hunting season ends or at least until the geese seem to

In a web browser on any checklist under checklist tools you can select to
download the list as a .csv file which can be opened in any spreadsheet program
such as Excel or Google sheets (which is free with a Google account). Depending
on how many lists, it can take a couple of minutes to cut and paste them all
together into a single spreadsheet. You can then sort the species column,
combine the duplicate species totals and delete the duplicates. In Excel if you
highlight the species column, select Conditional Formatting and Duplicate

I am not sure what the most elegant solution for CBC listing is today. In eBird
mobile (definitely for iOS, Android I can’t say for sure) one can choose “Trip
Summaries” under “Checklists” and see all species counts for any given
particular date range, including just one day. Minimizing the number of list
keepers in a sector party would help here. The “Trip” report can be emailed
out.
Another option is to create a sector eBird account. Anyone keeping lists within
the party can share their lists with that account. You can see a species list
in the account’s “My eBird” but not species totals. For that you’d need to
export its observations into Excel. Everything is likely getting summed in
Excel by the coordinators anyway.
I hope any other useful strategies will be shared here before CBC season hits.
The species highs/first/last all can still be accessed on the pages for a
location (country, state, county, or hotspot level). Check the buttons just
above the species list, under “Sightings”.

EBird used to have the function “Summarize My Observations”, which has now been
eliminated.  It was useful to produce a combined trip list of multiple
locations.  It was especially useful for the Christmas Bird Count.

My North Nassau CBC sector includes 19 locations (each a separate spot to drive
to).  In years past, I could produce a combined checklist in about 2 minutes
using “Summarize My Observations”.  Now what?  Print 19 checklists and combine
the data by hand?  This may take two hours instead of two minutes.

I would like to have seen “Summarize My Observations” be improved to allow more
flexible dates and selection of locations.  Instead, the whole feature is gone
- did eBird ask anyone before deleteing it?  I feel that birders spend a lot of
effort inputting their data - shouldn’t eBird give us a better interface to
inquire on it?

Does the loss of this feature bother anyone else or just me?

By the way, these other features were also deleted:  species All-Time
First/Last Records, Arrivals and Departures, and High Counts.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Creating separate checklists on eBird for the NY and NJ portions of Wallkill River NWR (Oil City Road) -- A Plea

2020-06-01 Thread Adelia Honeywood
Hi,I have done Walkill NWR twice and the first time I split up the checklists.
I did not split it up the second time because it appears that the entire
Liberty Loop trail is in one atlas block. I didn't understand why that block
would include NJ (most of the block does), but on my second trip I thought that
it would be ok to do one list because I wasn't crossing block boundaries. So
that fact may be confusing people.
Thank you for the reminder. I will be sure to split them in the future.

of the refuge is in NJ while Oil City Road and the “platform” are in New York.

One of the dedicated Atlas volunteers from our club described to me someone she

NY, goes into NJ, and ends in NY, and who had entered all the species seen on
one eBird checklist -- as is quite common, and moreover told her that he had

was that at present it was impossible, and it was up to us to educate
individual birders to the problem. This post is written is in the spirit of

One of the important aspects Julie Hart emphasized in Atlasing in 2020 on one
of her workshops is knowing that there are block borders and keeping each
checklist to within a specific block.

For those unfamiliar with the Liberty Loop Trail. It is a 3 mile
rectangular-shaped trail.
If you walk the Liberty Loop counterclockwise from the platform, when you come
to the long side of the rectangle that goes North-South on the western side of
the loop and you start getting to trees on either side of the path, you are
already in NJ.
If you walk the Liberty Loop clockwise from the platform, when you come to the
long side of the rectangle that goes North-South on the eastern side of the
loop, when you get to the second large tree on the right, you are close to NJ.
If you use the eBird app in the field, block borders are clearly marked. You
have to click on the “mileage” you have traveled shown on top and the border
will show up in white when you zoom out, with your current location shown as a
blue-and-white bull’s-eye. As you walk closer to the border, repeatedly look at
your location and when you come to the actual border of Unionville-SE, you
should end this checklist and begin a new checklist for NJ -- which you should
end when you leave NJ and come back to NY. The remaining portion in New York
could be a new checklist, and with the eBird app for both Android and iPhone,
there is no effort at all starting a new checklist.

Here is a link to Google maps, where under Satellite View you can easily see
the trees I’ve mentioned.

I was told by Curt McDermott (the eBird reviewer for Orange County, New York)
that the Refuge plans to place a sign at the NY-NJ border, and I hope that the
new information overcomes force of habit and inertia.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Oystercatcher nest in unprotected area

Hi Joe, Thank you for bringing the NPS's attention to the nest. Do you have
any idea how to get the NPS to reign in off-leash dogs at Plumb?

A well-plumaged Cattle Egret continues its visit at a small-ish greenspace, on
the north side of 28th Street, between Eighth & Ninth Avenues in Manhattan. In
the early morning at least, the Egret was a bit closer to Eigth Ave. - it was
feeding reasonably, as it has been for the days of observations.

I also visited some smaller parks in the lower-mid Manhattan area, & most
seemed to hold very scant migrant or late-lingering wintered-over birds.  The
Hudson river along lower Manhattan also appeared relatively quiet and the
greenspaces alongside somewhat the same, with the exception of lingering
Atlantic Brant in some areas, which are not unexpected into or even thru April.

Thanks to Ardith Bondi for her note on the Central Park reservoir (Manhattan)
Red-necked Grebe which she photographed Thursday; this bird was also reported
by a few others, in various media.  Should that grebe linger on into next week,
it will certainly seem very likely that it is the same which was rehabilitated
in Manhattan & subsequently released to the CP reservoir. It is mobile within
the reservoir & it seems to be feeding well.

Peaceful birding,
