[nysbirds-l] Mine road in West Point
Hello Does anyone know if mine road in West Point is open for birding at least along the road? Can a birder exit the vehicle and stay on the road? I recall last year some information here about the military closing the road to birders. Any information would be most appreciated. Re: [nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Painted Bunting
On the matter of the painted bunting why doesn't everyone just stop feeding birds at bird feeders. Let's assume an oriole or some other bird that belongs in warmer places arrives then we should definitely stop feeding birds. [nysbirds-l] Owls and birds of the Hudson highlands
A thorough hike through black rock forest yielded a great 3 saw whet owls all showing evidence of having been present for well over a week. I make this judgement based on the amount of pellets and wash under the birds. Also present was a high flying golden eagle, barred owl and red tailed hawk. Passerines included the basic winter birds including several yellow bellied sapsuckers, and two winter wrens. All the owls required long hikes well into the forest where forest management practices are establishing young spruce and white pines. Ironically Harriman state park yielded no owls in my surveys and a noticeable decrease in the acorns on the forest floor. [nysbirds-l] Fire island warblers
I started my water feature today at fire island and was greeted by prairie warbler, yellow, common yellowthroat, pine warbler and a nicely posing northern waterthrush. Other species included brown thrashers, cardinals, towees, song sparrow and many house finches. I will provide updates as the weeks go on.
